In a significant political development from Varanasi, opposition to the proposed UGC law has surfaced within the Bharatiya Janata Party. BJP booth president Vikas Kumar Mishra from Pachraon booth under Chiraigaon Mandal resigned from his post, protesting against the law and calling it harmful to future generations.

Vikas Mishra submitted his resignation letter to the BJP mandal president, stating that he was completely opposed to the party’s support for laws such as the UGC Act and the SC/ST Act. He described these legislations as divisive and against his social, moral, and ideological principles. According to him, continuing in the position would go against his self-respect and conscience.

Mishra, whose family has long been associated with the BJP, said he had raised concerns with several party leaders before resigning but received no clear response. Following the resignation, he claimed pressure was mounted on him to withdraw and delete the letter. The resignation letter was later shared by him on social media platforms, triggering mixed reactions from users.

He further alleged that the proposed law could lead to harassment of upper-caste students and demanded provisions against false complaints. BJP booth-level members supporting him warned that if the bill is not withdrawn, protests could intensify. The incident highlights growing internal dissent within the BJP over the UGC-related legislation in Uttar Pradesh.
