Varanasi’s major roads are undergoing a major infrastructure upgrade under the Chief Minister Green Roads Infrastructure Development Scheme (CM GRIDS). In the first phase, six key roads wider than 10 metres are being modernised with underground utility ducts designed to remove hanging wires and prevent repeated road digging.

The project includes secure underground passages for electricity cables and pipelines, storm water drainage systems, pedestrian footpaths, and modern street lighting — aiming to improve safety, traffic flow, and urban aesthetics. Around ₹47.84 crore has been invested in Phase 1, with construction already progressing on major stretches including Tilak Murti–Bharat Sevashram, Ghanti Mill–Sigra Police Station, and Sundarpur main road. A second phase worth ₹7.22 crore has also been approved.

Officials say the goal is to give Varanasi durable, clutter-free, future-ready roads. The real test will be whether the project delivers long-term relief from damaged roads and chaotic utility wiring.
