Varanasi Allen Coaching Institute Sealed as VDA Cracks Down After Lucknow Fire Tragedy

Varanasi, June 24, 2026: In the aftermath of the deadly Lucknow fire tragedy, the Varanasi Development Authority has sealed several coaching institutes in Varanasi, including premises linked to Allen Coaching Institute, over reported building norm violations and fire safety lapses. The VDA action has again brought student safety, building approvals and emergency preparedness at coaching centres under close public scrutiny.
The Varanasi Allen Coaching Institute sealed development comes after the June 22 fire in Lucknow's Aliganj area, where 15 people, mostly young students and trainees, were killed, according to News On AIR. The tragedy prompted the Uttar Pradesh government to order wider inspections of coaching centres and other commercial buildings, with officials saying fire-safety audits would be carried out in mission mode across the state.
Statewide Crackdown After Lucknow Fire
According to official and media reports, the state government has directed district administrations to survey coaching institutes and examine building arrangements, fire-safety systems, electrical safety and basic facilities. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has reportedly said buildings must be used only for the purpose for which they are approved, and that commercial activities such as coaching centres should not operate from unsafe or unauthorised basement areas.
The move follows serious questions about how educational and commercial spaces are being used in dense urban areas. In several districts, including Varanasi, Kanpur, Noida, Hapur, Mathura and others, inspection teams have checked whether coaching centres are operating with approved plans, valid clearances and adequate arrangements for safe evacuation.
Allen Branches Among Institutes Sealed in Varanasi
Local reports indicate that VDA sealed coaching institutes in Varanasi as part of a citywide enforcement drive. Dainik Jagran reported that eight coaching institutions or premises were covered in the action, including names such as Allen Coaching Institute, Aakash Institute and Mahendra Coaching. The New Indian Express, citing statewide action after the Lucknow tragedy, separately reported that VDA sealed two coaching centres in Varanasi, including Allen Coaching Centre.
As per local reporting, Allen branches at Sankat Mochan Marg and Saket Nagar were among the premises sealed during the VDA operation. Reports also named Aakash Institute in Durgakund, Mahendra Coaching and L-1 Coaching in the Durgakund/Brahmanand Colony area among centres where action was taken. Dalimss News has previously reported on related local enforcement involving coaching centres in Varanasi, including action against Aakash centres, while broader education safety checks continue across the city.
Building Norms and Safety Lapses Under Scanner
The main issues cited across reports include absence of approved building maps, operation in violation of prescribed building standards, use of premises beyond approved plans and concerns linked to emergency safety. Officials have also been checking fire-safety compliance, electrical arrangements, access routes and whether emergency exits are adequate for the number of students using such buildings.
The allegations remain administrative findings at this stage, and the article does not present them as court-proven facts. The VDA's action, however, signals that coaching centres operating from non-compliant buildings may face further scrutiny if they fail to produce approvals or rectify safety concerns. In local reports, VDA officials stressed that student safety, structural stability and compliance with urban planning norms are priorities.
Students Evacuated, Further Inspections Expected
Inspection teams comprising VDA officials, fire services and police reportedly visited coaching hubs and commercial pockets including Durgakund, Sankat Mochan, Saket Nagar, Sigra, Sarnath and Shivpur areas. Students were asked to leave premises wherever sealing action was required so that officials could complete enforcement without putting occupants at risk.
Further inspections are expected to continue in the coming days as authorities review coaching centres operating in congested buildings, upper floors, basements and converted commercial spaces. Officials are likely to examine whether institutions have proper exits, fire extinguishers, electrical load management, clear access routes and documents showing that the building use is legally permitted.
Why This Matters for Varanasi's Education Hubs
Varanasi has grown into a major education and coaching hub, attracting school students and competitive-exam aspirants from across eastern Uttar Pradesh and neighbouring regions. Thousands of students attend classes every day in coaching clusters around Durgakund, Sankat Mochan, Sigra and other areas. In such settings, even a small lapse in fire preparedness or building compliance can become a major public-safety risk.
The latest VDA action is therefore not only about individual coaching centres. It has raised a wider question for Varanasi's education ecosystem: whether fast-growing private coaching infrastructure is keeping pace with basic safety requirements. After the Lucknow tragedy, the focus has shifted firmly to prevention, accountability and ensuring that students can study in buildings that are legally approved, structurally safe and ready for emergencies.
