A major development has emerged from Lucknow regarding the rollout of smart prepaid electricity meters, as the Uttar Pradesh government has decided to temporarily halt further installations. The decision comes after growing concerns from consumers over practical difficulties in adapting to the new system.

State Energy Minister A.K. Sharma acknowledged that while millions of smart meters have already been installed across the state, several users have reported issues related to usage and billing. In response, the government has constituted a technical committee to review the implementation process and suggest improvements. Installation of new smart prepaid meters will remain on hold until the committee submits its findings.

Alongside this move, the government has introduced immediate relief measures for consumers already using prepaid meters. Under the revised guidelines, electricity supply will not be disconnected immediately when the balance reaches zero. Instead, users will be provided with a three-day grace period to recharge or clear their dues.

Additionally, for electricity connections up to 2 kilowatts, power supply will continue even if the balance goes negative up to ₹200. This step is expected to provide significant relief to households and reduce the inconvenience caused by sudden power disconnections.

Officials stated that the decision aims to strike a balance between technological advancement and consumer convenience. The findings of the technical committee are expected to play a crucial role in shaping the next phase of smart meter implementation in the state.

The government has assured that consumer concerns will be addressed effectively, ensuring a smoother and more user-friendly transition toward smart energy systems.
