UP College Protest Spreads in Varanasi: Harish Chandra PG College Students Burn Effigy of Principal

Students staged a protest on campus on Tuesday, expressing solidarity with the ongoing agitation at Udai Pratap College, popularly known as UP College. The demonstrators burned an effigy of the UP College principal and registered their opposition peacefully.
The protest comes amid continuing unrest at UP College following the killing of BSc student Surya Pratap Singh on March 20, which sparked anger among students and triggered a series of demonstrations demanding accountability from the college administration. Students have been staging sit-ins and protests while demanding the removal of the principal and stronger action from authorities.
During the protest at Harishchandra PG College, students said they were supporting the movement of UP College students and standing in solidarity with their demands. They alleged that the administration has so far failed to take adequate action, which has intensified frustration among students across educational institutions in Varanasi.
The demonstrators burned an effigy of the principal as a symbolic protest against what they described as administrative negligence. Despite the strong expression of anger, the protest was conducted peacefully and remained confined within the college campus.
UP College, established in 1909 and one of the largest educational institutions in eastern Uttar Pradesh, has witnessed growing student unrest in recent days. The campus has been the center of protests after the murder incident, with students organizing demonstrations, shaving their heads, and staging sit-ins demanding justice and administrative accountability.
Student leaders at Harishchandra PG College warned that if authorities fail to address the concerns raised by students and take concrete action soon, the protests could spread further across other colleges in Varanasi.
The incident highlights the growing wave of student activism in the city, as institutions express solidarity with the UP College movement and call for justice and administrative reforms.
