UGC Bill Debate Intensifies in Varanasi; Religious and Social Groups Voice Objections

Varanasi : Opposition to the proposed UGC Bill continues to intensify in Varanasi, with demonstrators gathering outside the District Magistrate’s office to express their concerns ahead of the anticipated developments around March 19. Representatives from various organisations assembled at the district headquarters and submitted a memorandum highlighting their objections to certain provisions of the proposed legislation.
During the demonstration, some protesters raised strong remarks regarding the debate surrounding religious and academic authorities. Referring to Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati, one of the Shankaracharyas, participants questioned the need for scrutiny of traditional religious institutions in the context of the UGC-related discussions. A statement heard during the protest said, “Those who have not shown their own degrees are now asking for proof from our Shankaracharya,” reflecting the sentiment among a section of the demonstrators.
With discussions around the UGC Bill continuing across different parts of the country, the developments in Varanasi underscore how the issue has begun to draw reactions from diverse social and religious groups, adding new dimensions to the ongoing national conversation.
