VARANASI: Three policemen attached to the Nadesar area have been suspended after a surprise raid uncovered an alleged gambling operation inside the Mint House campus under Cantt police station.

The action covers the Nadesar police outpost in-charge, a sub-inspector and a head constable. Police Commissioner Mohit Agrawal ordered the suspensions on the ground that gambling activity had continued in their jurisdiction without effective preventive action.

The raid was carried out on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday after the commissioner took suo motu cognisance of information about a large gambling setup. Deputy Commissioner of Police for the Varuna zone, Pramod Kumar, led a sizeable team into the campus. Four people were arrested, while several others allegedly fled when the police entered.

Officers recovered ₹21,000 described as stake money, three currency-counting machines and playing cards. The presence of counting machines has drawn attention because it suggests an operation more organised than a casual card game, though the scale and financial trail will have to be established through investigation.

The arrested men are entitled to due process, and the allegations against them will be tested in court. The suspensions are departmental measures, not criminal convictions. An internal inquiry will need to determine what information the local staff had, what patrol or intelligence duties were performed and whether any omission was deliberate.

For residents, the accountability question is larger than one raid. A police outpost exists partly to know what is happening in a relatively small area. When an alleged organised activity is discovered by a special team, the immediate question is whether the local unit missed it, ignored it or lacked the people and information required to act.

Suspension can protect the inquiry from interference, but it should not become the entire response. Investigators need to examine who organised the games, how participants were contacted, whether premises were rented or controlled by others and whether money moved digitally in addition to the cash found at the site.

Online betting and physical gambling now frequently overlap. A room may host card play while settlements happen through bank transfers, wallets or informal credit. That makes phones, account records and communication patterns more useful than the amount lying on a table at the moment of a raid.

The locality also needs a reliable way to report recurring illegal activity without exposing the complainant. Residents are often reluctant to speak when they believe an operator has local influence or prior warning. Anonymous information must still be verified, but it can help senior officers identify patterns that routine patrols miss.

The Mint House raid has produced arrests, recoveries and three suspensions. Its real test will come later: whether the inquiry explains how the operation functioned, whether disciplinary findings are made public in an appropriate form and whether the same room—or another nearby—quietly reopens after attention moves elsewhere.
