Varanasi: Amid the ongoing controversy surrounding the Manikarnika Ghat redevelopment project, Swami Jitendranand Saraswati has strongly supported the development initiative, stating that opposition to the project is primarily coming from individuals who have allegedly encroached upon ghats and heritage properties.

Speaking exclusively to Dalimss News, Swami Jitendranand said development is essential for a city like Kashi and accused protesters of acting out of self-interest rather than concern for heritage. “Those opposing development are the same people who have illegally occupied ghats and historic places. This is the real reason behind the protests,” he said.

Development and Heritage Must Go Together

The seer emphasized that development and heritage preservation are not contradictory. He cited the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor as an example, claiming it has significantly boosted tourism and enhanced the global image of Varanasi.

“Development has strengthened Kashi’s spiritual and economic stature. The Vishwanath Corridor has brought unprecedented tourist inflow,” he added.

Religion and Politics Should Be Discussed Openly

Commenting on the broader debate surrounding religion and politics, Swami Jitendranand stated that no country in the world is truly secular in practice. “Every nation follows a majority religion, and religion should not be treated as a taboo subject in politics,” he said.

Remarks on Shankaracharya Avimukteshwaranand

Swami Jitendranand also made sharp remarks on Shankaracharya Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati, questioning his legitimacy. “He is not a Shankaracharya and has demeaned the dignity of sadhus and saints. His frequent involvement in controversies and public confrontations has harmed the image of the saintly community,” he claimed.

On Dhirendra Shastri’s Tricolour Comment

Reacting to the recent controversy surrounding spiritual leader Dhirendra Shastri’s remarks about adding a crescent moon to the Indian tricolour, Swami Jitendranand said India’s democratic structure remains strong due to its Hindu-majority character. “No Islamic country in the world is democratic. In India, because Hindus are in the majority, minorities enjoy freedom and democracy,” he said.

Manikarnika Issue Continues to Spark Debate

The Manikarnika Ghat redevelopment project has triggered political, religious, and social debate in Varanasi, with voices both supporting and opposing the initiative. While the administration maintains that the project balances heritage conservation with modern infrastructure, critics continue to raise concerns.

Swami Jitendranand Saraswati’s remarks have added a new dimension to the debate, further intensifying discussions around development, religion, and heritage in Kashi.
