SIT Probes Golf Course Road Biker Chase

GURUGRAM: A five-member special investigation team is reconstructing the Golf Course Road road-rage case in which a woman motorcyclist was allegedly chased and rammed near the Sector 55-56 Rapid Metro station, after police added attempt-to-murder and related charges to the FIR and a local court remanded two accused to police custody till Friday.

The SIT is headed by the Assistant Commissioner of Police for crime and women and includes the Sector 56 station house officer, the Sohna crime branch in-charge and two other officers. On Wednesday, a court sent Kalyan Singh Bainsla, about 33, and his cousin Lavnish, about 34, into police custody so investigators could take them to the spot and recreate the sequence of events.

According to police findings shared with investigators, Bainsla was driving a white Maruti Suzuki Ciaz (HR-30-Y-4949) when the collision with Delhi resident Shivani Chauhan's Aprilia RS 457 took place between about 7.15 am and 7.30 am on Sunday, September 13. Police say the first interaction occurred near the Sector 53 Metro station. After a brief altercation, the car allegedly pursued the motorcycle for roughly 1.5 to 2 kilometres along Golf Course Road before hitting the two-wheeler near the Rapid Metro station. The impact threw Chauhan off the bike; she reported injuries to her knees.

SIT sources told investigators that Bainsla and three friends had been at Empire Club Bar and Lounge in Sector 25 between midnight and about 5 am on the intervening night of September 13 and 14 before returning. Lavnish was seated in the front passenger seat at the time of the incident, police said. Notices have been served on the other two occupants for statements. Whether alcohol was a factor is still under examination.

The case began after a video from Chauhan's bike camera circulated widely on September 14, showing the Ciaz repeatedly moving alongside the motorcycle before the bike slid across the road as traffic continued. Police took suo motu cognisance, registered an FIR at Sector 56 police station under sections relating to rash driving and endangering life, and formed teams to trace the vehicle. Bainsla and Lavnish were arrested from Dausa in Rajasthan on September 15 after searches at Palwal and other locations.

After examining Chauhan's statement, bike-camera footage and CCTV, police added Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections including 109(1) for attempt to murder, along with provisions relating to stalking and outraging the modesty of a woman. DCP (East) Sandeep Kumar has said the upgrade rested on the suspected intention behind the chase and impact, not only on the severity of injuries. Investigators separately obtained GMDA and DLF camera footage covering Golf Course Road and the Metro station area between 6 am and 8 am on September 13.

Police said Bainsla briefly tried to slip custody in Rajasthan on the pretext of relieving himself, fell and was given first aid. Both accused deny a deliberate attempt to kill; Bainsla had earlier claimed a group of bikers rode aggressively and that he tried to avoid a collision. The SIT is testing those claims against multi-camera footage, vehicle forensics and witness accounts.

The next court listing is linked to the Friday custody deadline. Women riders' groups have sought stricter action on late-night club traffic spilling onto arterial roads. Traffic police have increased visible checks on Golf Course Road during early mornings while the reconstruction continues.
