Open Storm Drain in Sector 70A Raises Safety Alarm

GURUGRAM: A stretch of unfinished stormwater drain beside a main road in Sector 70A has become a monsoon safety concern, with residents saying the excavated channel has been left open while traffic and pedestrians continue to use the adjoining carriageway.

The drain is part of the wider network being developed across the new sectors to carry rainwater towards the city's master drains. That long-term purpose is important in an area repeatedly affected by waterlogging. The immediate problem, however, is the condition of the work zone: an open edge beside a live road can become difficult to judge after dark or during a heavy shower, when pooled water hides the depth and boundary of an excavation.

Residents have sought firm barricading, reflective markers and adequate night lighting until the civil work is finished. Loose tape or a few temporary cones are not enough along a road used by two-wheelers, school vehicles, delivery riders and people walking between residential societies. A small steering error can have serious consequences when there is no recovery space between the carriageway and the trench.

The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority is constructing storm drains in the Sector 68-75 belt as part of an integrated drainage plan. The network is meant to provide an outlet for neighbourhood runoff and reduce the familiar pattern in which roads turn into holding ponds after intense rain. Construction sequencing is therefore as important as the final engineering: sections should be opened only when crews, materials and utility clearances are ready, and exposed stretches should be secured every evening.

Underground power and communication lines have complicated drainage work in this corridor before. Such conflicts can slow excavation or force a redesign, but they do not remove the contractor's responsibility to maintain a safe site. Any delay should trigger stronger protection around the trench, not leave road users guessing where the work begins.

There is also a maintenance question. Soil and construction debris kept beside an open drain can wash back into the channel, reducing capacity before the new system is fully commissioned. Inlets must be cleared, spoil removed and temporary pumping arranged if rainwater collects inside the incomplete structure.

For commuters, the safest response is to slow down well before the work zone and avoid overtaking along the exposed edge, particularly at night. Residents should report missing barricades or submerged excavations with a location photograph rather than entering the site themselves.

The drain promises a practical improvement for Sector 70A once it is connected and operational. Until then, the project has two jobs: build the permanent outlet and protect the public around the unfinished one. A visible completion schedule, continuous barricading and a quick pre-monsoon-style safety audit would turn a recurring complaint into a manageable construction site.
