Varanasi: Bollywood actor Sanjay Mishra has called for preserving the cultural soul of Varanasi while embracing modern development, saying the city's timeless identity should never be sacrificed in the name of urban expansion.

In an exclusive interaction with Dalimss News, Mishra said development is essential for every city, but it should complement its heritage rather than replace it.Geographic ReferenceHistory

"You can't turn Banaras into Bangkok. There is no need to change what makes Banaras special," the actor said.

Speaking about the rapid transformation taking place in Varanasi, Mishra emphasized that the city's real charm lies in its ancient temples, iconic ghats, narrow lanes, spiritual atmosphere, and centuries-old traditions. According to him, these are the qualities that make Banaras one of the world's most unique cultural destinations.

He also remarked that Banaras cannot be converted entirely into a four-lane city, adding that the fragrance of the city is found in its old streets, traditions, and timeless character.

While supporting improvements in infrastructure, connectivity, and civic amenities, Mishra stressed that modernization should be carried out with sensitivity towards the city's historical and cultural legacy.

"Development and preservation must move together," he said, adding that protecting Banaras' identity is just as important as improving facilities for residents and visitors.

The actor described Varanasi as more than just a city, calling it an emotion and a living heritage that has preserved India's spiritual and cultural roots for generations. He praised the warmth of its people and said the city continues to offer peace, devotion, and a unique connection to India's ancient civilization.

His remarks come at a time when Varanasi is witnessing major infrastructure projects aimed at improving urban mobility and connectivity. As debates continue over balancing modernization with heritage conservation, Mishra's comments echo the sentiment that the city's historic character should remain untouched even as it progresses.
