Fourth Accused Held in Assault on Varanasi Lawyer

VARANASI: Sarnath police have arrested a fourth person accused in an assault that left a lawyer with a serious head injury in December 2025. The suspect, identified by police as Ankit Kushwaha of Salarpur in Rasoolgarh, was detained at Tilmapur on Saturday and sent to judicial custody after questioning.

Lawyer Vikas Mishra of Ledhupur registered the original case after the December 17 incident. He said he was sitting at a tea shop in Shivaji Nagar Colony and speaking with a contractor and a mason when a group of eight to ten people arrived and attacked without warning.

Mishra suffered a significant head injury, while the mason’s finger was fractured, according to the complaint reported by local media. Police had previously detained three accused, including one minor. The latest arrest brings the number proceeded against to four, but the reported group size indicates that the investigation may still involve other unidentified or untraced people.

Station officer Pankaj Kumar Tripathi confirmed the arrest and the accused’s production in the legal process. The allegations have not yet been tested at trial. An arrest establishes that police believe there are grounds to proceed; guilt can be determined only after evidence and the defence are considered by a court.

Because the case is more than eight months old, the quality of evidence preservation matters. Investigators will need to connect each accused to a specific role through witness accounts, medical records, any available CCTV and identification evidence. A broad allegation that a group attacked cannot substitute for proving what an individual did.

The minor already detained must be handled through the juvenile justice system, with identity protection and procedures distinct from those applied to adults. That separation is not a technical favour; it is part of the law’s recognition that children require a rehabilitative framework and special safeguards.

For the complainant, each arrest may feel like movement in a case that has remained open for months. For the justice system, speed now has to be matched by accuracy. The next useful public update would be whether all accused have been identified and whether the investigation report has been filed. Until a court rules, careful attribution protects both the victim’s complaint and the accused persons’ right to a fair trial.

If additional suspects remain, police should communicate progress without releasing material that could compromise identification or trial. The complainant likewise deserves updates through the formal case channel rather than learning developments from social media. Timely information reduces rumour and helps witnesses remain engaged through a process that can otherwise feel distant and slow.
