The Ramnagar Ramlila turns to Bharata on Monday. The eleventh evening of this year's cycle, according to the programme of the Shri Ramleela Committee, Ramnagar, Kashi, covers Bharata's return to Ayodhya, the royal assembly, his journey towards Chitrakoot, his meeting with Nishad, the crossing of the Ganga and the ashram of the sage Bharadvaj.
It is a night with almost no battle and very little spectacle, yet it carries some of the most tender passages in the Ayodhya chapters of the epic. Up to now the story has followed Rama out of the city. From Monday the leela follows the brother who was left behind and who refuses the crown that was won for him.
In the Ramcharitmanas of Goswami Tulsidas, which the Ramnagar leela follows verse by verse, Bharata is away at his maternal grandfather's home when the exile and Dasharatha's death take place. Messengers sent by the royal guru Vasishtha bring him back. He reaches a silent Ayodhya, learns from his mother Kaikeyi what has happened in his absence, and turns on her in grief and anger. He then goes to Kaushalya, Rama's mother, to plead that he had no part in the plot.
The assembly that follows is the hinge of the episode. In the epic, Vasishtha and the ministers urge Bharata to accept the throne, as his father had agreed. Bharata refuses and announces instead that he will go to the forest and bring Rama home. The city decides to go with him, and the queens, the guru, the army and ordinary citizens set out together.
That leads to one of the best-known scenes of the Ayodhya chapters, at Shringverpur on the bank of the Ganga. Nishadraj Guha, the boatmen's chief who had ferried Rama across only days earlier, sees an army approaching and fears Bharata has come to finish off his brother. He readies his men for a fight. When he learns why Bharata has come, the suspicion turns into an embrace, and Guha leads him to the spot where Rama had slept on a bed of grass.
After the river crossing the procession reaches Prayag and the ashram of Bharadvaj. In the Manas, the sage receives the whole travelling party with a hospitality that seems to arrive from nowhere, and Bharata, offered every comfort, asks only for love at Rama's feet. The evening is expected to end there, with Chitrakoot still ahead.
In Ramnagar these places are not painted backdrops. The leela uses fixed sites spread across the town, so when the story moves the audience moves too, walking behind the swaroops, the young performers who play the principal roles. There are no microphones. The Ramayanis chant the Manas, the dialogue is delivered in a raised voice that carries in the open air, and much of the light still comes from lamps and torches.
In the story, Monday retraces ground covered the night before. On Sunday, the tenth evening took Rama across the rivers to Bharadvaj, over the Yamuna and on to Chitrakoot, as Dalimss News set out in its Day 10 preview, before Sumantra's return carried the grief back to Dasharatha. The Ayodhya chapters themselves had opened on Day 8 with the coronation plans and the Kopbhavan scene, the night Kaikeyi's demands set this entire journey in motion.
The ceremonial side of the month carries on around the story. Members of the Kashi royal family traditionally watch from elephant-back, and the elephants brought in for the season have made news of their own, including the morning one of them, Dhanraj, broke his chains and spent hours in Pampasar pond before mahouts coaxed him out.
The 2026 cycle began on 25 September and runs for 31 evenings to 25 October. On the committee's list, Ravana vadh falls on 20 October, which is also Vijayadashami this year, the Bharat Milap on 23 October and the coronation on 24 October. Sharadiya Navratri begins on Sunday, 11 October, so the middle chapters of the leela will run alongside the festival's first week.
Tuesday's twelfth evening, as listed, brings Bharata to Chitrakoot itself, where he meets Rama, receives the paduka, the sandals he will place on the throne, and the scene known as Bharata darshan. Monday stops a step short of that reunion, on the road. The unfinished feeling is the point of the night: a prince with a kingdom at his feet, choosing instead to walk the forest road after his brother.
