Ramlila Elephant Dhanraj Breaks Chains, Enters Pampasar Pond

Dhanraj, one of the elephants brought for the Ramnagar Ramlila, broke his chains around 11:30 am on Monday after a delay in feeding, walked into the nearby Pampasar pond by Panchvati ground, and stayed in the water until about 4 pm before mahouts coaxed him out.

Four elephants arrive each year from Jiyanpur in Azamgarh for the Ramnagar season and stay with their mahouts in the open garden stretch by Panchvati. Dhanraj is the animal that Kashi royal family member Anant Narayan Singh has ridden for the past six years while watching the Lila. Monday's mood swing began when his feed was late. He snapped the chains, headed for the pond, and sent people who had been bathing there into a scramble.

Chief mahout Izrail and other mahouts reached on information and tried to calm him. For hours the animal stayed in the water while a crowd gathered to watch. Branches and feed brought from a distance were shown to lure him. No injury to the public was reported in the accounts available from organisers and mahouts. The focus after the recovery was food, a behavioural check, and getting Dhanraj back into the Lila schedule.
