Varanasi, June 21, 2026: Rail connectivity across Purvanchal has received a major boost with the launch of new train services linking eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar with Delhi, along with the extension of a passenger service up to Varanasi City.

New Services Flagged Off

According to the Ministry of Railways and reports, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary flagged off the Chhapra-Delhi Express and Mau-Delhi Express on June 19.

The Railway Minister also inaugurated the extension of the Dohrighat-Aunrihar-Dohrighat train service up to Varanasi City through video conferencing. The programme was held at Chhapra Junction, with related launches connected to eastern Uttar Pradesh.

Who Will Benefit

The Chhapra-Delhi Express is expected to improve connectivity for passengers from Chhapra, Ballia, Mau, Azamgarh, Jaunpur, Sultanpur, Lucknow, Kanpur, Aligarh and Delhi. The Mau-Delhi Express will offer another direct link between eastern Uttar Pradesh and the national capital.

The extension of the Dohrighat-Aunrihar service up to Varanasi City is especially important for shorter regional travel. It can help passengers from smaller towns connect more easily with Varanasi City station and onward routes.

Boost for Eastern UP

Purvanchal has long needed stronger long-distance and inter-district railway connectivity. Students, workers, patients, traders and families regularly travel between eastern Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Delhi.

New services can reduce travel pressure on existing routes and give passengers more options. They also support regional economic movement by connecting smaller stations to bigger corridors.

For districts such as Mau, Azamgarh and Jaunpur, a direct or improved Delhi link can make a practical difference for migrant workers, students preparing for exams, small traders and families travelling for medical needs. Better local extensions also help passengers avoid unnecessary road transfers.

Why It Matters

For Varanasi, the extension up to Varanasi City adds local importance to the larger rail announcement. Better rail links can support tourism, education travel, medical visits, trade and daily passenger movement across the region.

The real impact will depend on regularity, punctuality, coach availability and passenger awareness. But the launch is a positive step for Purvanchal's long-standing demand for stronger Delhi and regional connectivity.

Rail services are often judged over time rather than on launch day. If the new trains are reliable and affordable, they can become part of the region's everyday mobility network and strengthen Varanasi City's role as a passenger hub.
