Over 10 Million Devotees Expected at Kashi Vishwanath Temple During Sawan; VIP Darshan Suspended Across 7 Entry Gates

VARANASI, INDIA — The Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple administration has finalized massive preparations for the holy month of Sawan (July 30 to August 28), during which a record footprint of over 10 million devotees is expected in Kashi.

To manage the unprecedented surge and ensure equitable access, authorities have introduced strict crowd-control measures, opened seven designated entry gates, and completely suspended VIP and special darshan passes throughout the month.

Key Guidelines and Restricted Items for Pilgrims

To maintain seamless movement through queue lanes and prevent security bottlenecks, the temple trust has issued mandatory guidelines for all visiting pilgrims:

• Only Gangajal Permitted: Devotees will be allowed to carry only holy Ganges water (Gangajal) inside the main sanctum (Garbhagriha).

• Prohibited Items: Mobile phones, smartwatches, electronic devices, bags, earphones, and leather items are strictly barred.

• Touts Warning: The administration warned pilgrims against fraudulent individuals claiming to offer VIP access or fast-track darshan for money, urging visitors to report touts immediately to on-duty police personnel.

First Monday Jalabhishek Traditions & Extended Waiting Times

The auspicious first Monday of Sawan (August 3) will mark peak turnout, opening with the age-old tradition of Jalabhishek performed by members of the Yadav community—who hold the ancestral privilege of making the first formal water offering to Lord Vishwanath.

With peak-hour waiting times expected to stretch between 8 to 10 hours, authorities have set up drinking water stations, medical booths, continuous shade awnings, and mist fans along all queue routes. Devotees are advised to stay hydrated, wear comfortable footwear, and follow queue instructions carefully.
