No Active SIM, No WhatsApp: Government Enforces Strict New Messaging Rules from March 1

From March 1, WhatsApp users may experience a major change in how the messaging app works. Under a new SIM binding rule, WhatsApp will function only on the device where the registered SIM card is physically inserted. This means that if the SIM card linked to a WhatsApp number is removed from the phone or used in another device, access to WhatsApp may be disrupted, even if internet connectivity is available.
According to the new system, WhatsApp will no longer operate independently of the SIM. The app will verify whether the registered mobile number’s SIM is actively present in the same device. This change is expected to particularly affect users who frequently change phones, use secondary devices, or live abroad while operating WhatsApp on an Indian SIM.
The impact will also extend to web-based usage. WhatsApp Web and Telegram Web sessions may now require re-authentication every few hours through QR code scanning. Authorities say the move is aimed at curbing cyber fraud, fake accounts, and unauthorized access, ensuring that messaging accounts remain directly linked to genuine SIM holders. Users are advised to keep their registered SIM active in their primary device to avoid service interruptions.
