Varanasi: A new development has surfaced in the firing incident at Udai Pratap College in Varanasi after a family member of the accused issued a detailed statement regarding the circumstances leading up to the shooting.

The brother of the accused, Manjeet Chauhan, has claimed that the incident was allegedly the result of prolonged harassment faced by his brother. According to his statement, the accused had reportedly been dealing with both mental and physical harassment for nearly two years from the victim, identified as Surya Pratap, along with others associated with him.

He further alleged that repeated threats, abusive behavior, and continuous bullying had placed his brother under severe pressure, eventually leading to the unfortunate incident. The family member also stated that after the firing took place, the accused did not attempt to escape and instead surrendered before the police and legal authorities.

In the statement, the family also rejected claims circulating in some reports that portrayed the accused as someone attempting to build a “mafia-like image.” They described such portrayals as exaggerated and based on misunderstandings related to earlier disputes.

Meanwhile, the police have not officially confirmed these allegations. Authorities have stated that the investigation is still underway and that all possible angles—including personal rivalry, past conflicts, and the sequence of events leading to the firing—are being carefully examined.

The incident has already created tension among students and within the campus community. Security arrangements have been strengthened in the area as officials continue their investigation and appeal to the public to avoid speculation until the facts are fully established.

The tragic incident at the college has sparked wider discussions around campus safety, student conflicts, and the importance of addressing grievances before they escalate into violence.
