National Lok Adalat Settles 93,639 Cases Across Gurugram Courts

GURUGRAM: The National Lok Adalat organised by the District Legal Services Authority disposed of 93,639 cases by mutual consent out of 1,47,144 matters listed across the district courts and sub-divisional courts, with settlements totalling Rs 15.68 crore, officials said.

The drive on 12 September was held under the guidance of the Punjab and Haryana High Court and the supervision of District and Sessions Judge Narendra Sura. Twenty-one benches sat in Gurugram, with one special bench each at Sohna and Pataudi. Chief Judicial Magistrate and DLSA co-secretary Nisha said the listed tally of 1,47,144 included matters from Sohna and Pataudi, and that 93,639 cases were settled amicably for a combined amount of Rs 15,68,42,235.

Special traffic challan help desks were set up on the ground floor of the Tower of Justice and at Vikas Sadan so that people could check challan details and complete settlement formalities without moving between scattered counters. Traffic compoundable matters form a large share of Lok Adalat volume in Gurugram because of the city's dense highway and arterial enforcement.

National Lok Adalat sittings are meant to cut pendency by offering one-day compromise windows in pre-litigation and pending cases where both sides can agree. Family, cheque, motor accident and municipal compoundable disputes often dominate the cause lists alongside traffic files. The Gurugram figure of more than 93,000 settlements in a single day reflects both the size of the listed docket and the readiness of parties to close matters when benches and help desks are concentrated.

District Legal Services Authority teams typically coordinate with police, transport and municipal wings before such sittings so that challan and compounding data are available on the spot. The Sohna and Pataudi special benches were intended to spare litigants from those sub-divisions a trip to the main district complex for routine settlements. Holding benches closer to those towns also reduces crowding at the district court complex on Lok Adalat day.

Officials did not publish a category-wise break-up of the 93,639 settlements in the initial briefing. Even so, the headline numbers, the Rs 15.68 crore settlement value and the traffic help-desk arrangement give a clear picture of how the 12 September sitting was structured. Further disposal statistics, if released by DLSA, would show how many files from each subject category moved out of the pending pool. For now, the authority's stated outcome is the combined disposal count and the settlement sum recorded across the 21 city benches and the two sub-divisional special benches.
