The recent murder of a BSc student inside Udai Pratap College has once again drawn attention to a long and troubling history of violence linked to student rivalry and campus dominance in Varanasi’s educational institutions. The incident is not isolated, but part of a pattern that has unfolded over nearly three decades.

Over the past 29 years, more than 30 murder cases have been reported in and around college campuses in the city. These incidents have often been linked to disputes over influence, group clashes, and student politics. In several cases, violence escalated to extreme levels, including the use of firearms, and even high-profile attacks involving automatic weapons. From the 1997 killing of student leaders in a major shooting to more recent incidents in colleges like UP College and others, the trend reflects recurring tensions that have, at times, turned fatal.

The issue also highlights a complex reality where student leadership spaces have, over time, produced both political figures and individuals linked to criminal networks. While many former student leaders have gone on to hold public office, others have been associated with organized crime. The latest incident underscores the continuing challenge of ensuring that educational spaces remain safe and free from cycles of violence, while addressing the deeper structural issues that allow such conflicts to persist.
