Meta VR Glasses debut at about 100 grams for Spring 2027

MENLO PARK: Meta has put a glasses-shaped VR headset on the calendar. Meta VR Glasses, unveiled in the company's Connect newsroom posts dated 23-24 September 2026, are pitched as a roughly 100-gram headset - about as heavy as a deck of cards - with a separate compute-and-battery puck on an optical tether.

List price is $1,299.99. Meta says the product goes on sale in Spring 2027. That is a consumer booking date, not an India launch plan; the company has not published India pricing, BIS paperwork or a local preorder window in the same note.

Two-part hardware: glasses plus puck

The design split is the whole story. Sensors and display live in the frames. Compute, storage and battery sit in a clip-on puck. Meta says that layout makes the face piece about five times lighter than Meta Quest 3 and removes the usual strap stack from the head.

Displays are described as 5K Infinite Display micro-OLED panels at 37 pixels per degree, paired with custom pancake lenses. Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos are listed in the frames. Open sides and a passthrough camera are meant to keep wearers aware of the room - cinema sessions and desk work without full enclosure.

Power comes from Qualcomm's Snapdragon Reality Elite. Meta claims up to three hours of continuous high-resolution media playback from the puck, with 45W fast charging. Controllers are optional for many tasks: Meta AI is built into the OS, and eye plus hand gestures are meant to open apps, move windows and start playback.

Cinema, sports and a portable desk

Meta calls the headset the first IMAX Enhanced certified VR device and says select titles will use IMAX's expanded aspect ratio at home. Disney+ 3D titles and themed viewing rooms are flagged from November in select countries, with broader partner catalogues named across film and sports. ESPN Immersive Sports, MLB, NBC Sports, TNT Sports and UFC appear in the company's sports list, with more than 100 immersive live US sports events a year once the glasses ship.

Work mode is a multi-screen private workspace. Any flat surface can become a keyboard and touchpad, Meta says, with full-colour passthrough so a desk, phone and surroundings stay visible. Gaming starts with more than 75 gesture-first titles plus cloud streaming options. Hologram calling is described as a photoreal digital presence for hands-free video calls that other participants can also see on phone or computer screens.

None of that softens the open questions for Indian buyers. Customs duty, authorised service, optical prescription paths and whether film or sports packages land on the same timetable as the US catalogue all sit outside the Connect post. For now the verifiable record is weight, form factor, chipset, $1,299.99, Spring 2027 and a media-first pitch that treats glasses-plus-puck as the next Quest-class form factor.

Meta's own comfort pitch rests on open sides and passthrough rather than a sealed ski-goggle shell. That choice trades some immersion for longer wear, which is exactly what a three-hour movie or a cross-country flight demands. The puck on a tether will annoy some users and free others; either way, it is the mechanical reason the face piece can stay near 100 grams.

Indian importers and authorised XR retailers now have a dated SKU to plan around. Until Meta publishes a local price card, treat $1,299.99 and Spring 2027 as the only firm commercial coordinates in the Connect note.
