NEW DELHI: The Mercedes-Benz GLE starts at Rs 1,00,00,000, while the GLS starts at Rs 1,37,50,000 on the company's India price page. These are model-family starting figures. They do not establish the individual prices of every engine or equipment version, and the comparison needs to account for the GLS's additional seating row.

Price as of 6 November 2026, 00:20 IST. The figures above refer to the regular GLE and GLS listings. The separately listed Mercedes-Maybach GLS is outside this comparison. A model-family price should not be assigned to a particular engine without a matching official quotation.

Start with the passengers, then the badge

The most consequential distinction for a household is whether it needs the GLS's extra row. An occasional journey with more relatives can change the brief completely. Conversely, an owner who usually travels with an empty rear compartment needs to consider how often that additional accommodation would actually be used.

Write down the occupants for a normal weekday, an airport transfer and a family trip. Then try those arrangements in the cars. This keeps the comparison tied to a real transport requirement, rather than assuming that moving further up the model range automatically solves a problem the household does not have.

Second-row comfort and third-row access are different tests

The GLE page describes electrically adjustable rear seats, with longitudinal movement of up to 10 cm. That feature makes the relationship between passenger room and luggage space worth exploring during a demonstration. Set the front seats first, then ask the regular rear occupants to find a comfortable position.

For the GLS, repeat the exercise with the third row in use. Ask passengers to enter and leave rather than judging access from the kerb. Anyone who expects older relatives to travel there should make that part of the viewing. An electrically operated seat mechanism and a comfortable route into the seat answer separate questions.

The engine labels need careful reading

The diesel technical sections include a larger-engine option in each model family. That creates an opportunity to compare like engine sizes rather than treating the lowest family price as if it described the same hardware. The published torque and acceleration entries also show that a shared engine capacity does not guarantee identical vehicle performance.

Neither acceleration claims nor torque figures establish how smoothly either SUV responds in slow traffic. A useful drive would include the sort of crawling queue, junction exit and parking manoeuvre the owner normally encounters. If the car is frequently chauffeur-driven, the rear passenger's experience deserves as much attention as the driver's first impression.

Check the GLS with luggage as well as people

The GLS technical data lists a 355-litre boot and a length of 5,209 mm. These figures belong to its own vehicle specification and should not be interpreted as a promise about a particular suitcase arrangement. With every intended passenger aboard, try loading the bags that would accompany them.

This is a particularly important exercise when the extra row is the reason for considering the GLS. Folding it away may create a useful loading arrangement, but it also changes the passenger plan. Settle the people-and-bags combination together before treating the ability to fold a seat as a complete answer to luggage needs.

Keep the regular GLS and Mercedes-Maybach GLS configurations separate when saving a quotation. Sharing part of a model name does not make them the same price entry. For this comparison, the lower GLE figure and the regular GLS figure are the relevant starting points.

Who each model is for

The GLE merits attention from readers focused on the main rear seating area and a lower published entry figure within this pair. The GLS is relevant when the additional row is part of a clear household requirement. These are use cases drawn from the official layouts, not a road-test ranking of comfort or value.
