MCG Told to Speed Up Rs 366 Crore Works Across 18 Gurugram Wards

GURUGRAM: Municipal teams have been told to accelerate roads, drains, sewer lines and water-supply works valued at Rs 366.40 crore across the city's first 18 wards, with the latest review placing specific completion dates against projects that residents usually experience only as barricades and dug-up streets.

Industries and Commerce Minister Rao Narbir Singh reviewed the programme with Municipal Corporation of Gurugram commissioner Pradeep Dahiya and senior engineering officials on Saturday. His directions focused on both pace and finish: roads should match surrounding levels, manhole covers must sit flush with the carriageway, and utilities should be coordinated before new surfaces are laid.

That sequence sounds elementary, but it addresses one of Gurugram's most persistent failures. A road completed by one department is often cut weeks later for a water or cable line. Uneven covers become wheel traps, while a raised carriageway can push rainwater into homes or trap it at the kerb. The review asked engineers to treat these interfaces as part of the project rather than defects to be fixed after handover.

Drain deadlines run into winter

Ward 9 has a Rs 4.22 crore reinforced-concrete storm drain package connecting the Euro School side with the GMDA bus stand and stretches from Basai Road towards Krishna Nagar. Its stated completion date is December 16. A separate Rs 1.69 crore job covers cleaning and desilting between Umang Bhardwaj Chowk and the Gadoli culvert, along with conversion of a pipe drain into a box section by November 30.

In Ward 16, Rs 1.80 crore is being spent to connect internal drains at Uppal Southend with the master network, add pumps in low-lying pockets and build another box drain. Sector 9 and Sector 9A packages valued at Rs 7.41 crore and Rs 5.16 crore are scheduled for completion by November 10.

South City 2 is due to receive a Rs 1.83 crore model-road package from Baani Square Market towards the councillor's office, including footpath and drainage work, by September 25. Expanded parts of Dhankot have more than Rs 8 crore in sewer infrastructure under execution.

Dates need visible site evidence

A two-million-litre-per-day sewage treatment plant at Begampur Khatola, costing Rs 6.94 crore, is targeted for trial runs by December 31. The minister also directed officials to clear encroachments before rebuilding Dhankot's main road and to act against ready-mix concrete plants operating inside prohibited areas.

The review creates a useful list, but its value depends on public tracking. MCG should display contractor names, physical progress and revised dates at each site, particularly where a deadline extends beyond the monsoon. Residents can then distinguish a genuinely active project from a trench that has simply been left open.

Completion must mean more than closing a work order. Drains should be tested for flow, manholes checked against final road level, and restored stretches inspected after the first rain. The Rs 366.40 crore total is significant, yet the city's real measure will be whether these 18 wards see fewer repeat excavations, safer roads and water that reaches the drain instead of the doorstep.
