MCG Finalises Sohna Site for Fresh Waste

GURUGRAM: The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram has finalised a site in Sohna for the collection and processing of fresh municipal waste, with operations targeted for January or February 2027 after a processing agency builds its plant, officials said on Friday.

Dr Preetpal Singh, joint commissioner for the Swachh Bharat Mission at MCG, said the identified site will not be used until the agency installs the fresh waste processing plant. The civic body is aiming for the January or February window next year. Until then, freshly generated waste continues to go to the Bandhwari landfill, where MCG and two agencies are also processing legacy waste.

Tender reopen and revised rate

Bidding for the processing tender will open again on September 25. The request for proposal requires CCTV cameras at the facility and real-time data integration with the solid waste management portal. The contract is proposed for three years from the date of agreement.

The tender rate was earlier revised from Rs 240 per ton to Rs 450 per ton after an earlier float drew no bids. Officials said the civic body has floated the tender multiple times this year to secure an agency for fresh waste processing. Union minister Manohar Lal Khattar had earlier directed officials to stop dumping freshly generated waste at Bandhwari and to identify a separate site for daily waste.

Separating fresh waste from the overloaded Bandhwari mound has been a standing civic demand from residents of surrounding villages and from environmental monitors. A Sohna plant only helps if it actually runs. Until the agency is selected and the plant is built, Bandhwari remains the default tip for daily trucks.

Households and RWAs should not expect an immediate change in collection routes. The September 25 reopen is the next procedural gate. If bids arrive at the revised rate, MCG still needs time for evaluation, award and construction before the first load of fresh waste can legally skip Bandhwari. Local bodies near Sohna will also watch how truck routing is planned so that the new site does not simply shift odour and leachate complaints from one belt to another. Transparency on CCTV feeds and tonnage data on the SWM portal will be the public test of whether the plant, once built, actually diverts fresh waste as promised.
