MCG Seals 7 Buildings, Removes 180-Plus Ramps

GURUGRAM: Municipal Corporation enforcement teams on Monday demolished one large unauthorised commercial building, sealed seven commercial buildings and removed more than 180 illegal ramps from road margins across several older neighbourhoods, officials said.

A team led by Assistant Engineer R.K. Mogia acted on New Colony Circular Road, where a large commercial building was brought down with a JCB. Two more commercial buildings in the same pocket were sealed, and more than 80 illegal ramps on the road edge were removed. In Patel Nagar and Barf Khana, two further buildings were sealed.

Where else teams moved

A second team, led by Assistant Engineer Sunil Lather, sealed three buildings in Dharam Colony and Ashok Vihar Phase 3 and cleared encroachments around Atul Kataria Chowk road so that the carriageway could be kept free. A third team under Assistant Engineer Hariprakash demolished more than 100 ramps in Rajendra Park.

Taken together, the Monday drive sealed seven buildings, demolished one large commercial structure and cleared well over 180 ramps. Illegal ramps that jut from shopfronts onto public road width are a recurring complaint in older colonies, where they shrink space for pedestrians and slow emergency vehicles.

Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya said the corporation's action against illegal construction and encroachment on public land would continue. He told enforcement teams to act as per rules wherever unauthorised building or occupation of roads and footpaths is found, stressing that those spaces exist for public movement and cannot be treated as private extensions.

Sealing notices and ramp removal rarely end the cycle on their own. Shopkeepers often rebuild low ramps within days unless follow-up inspections return. Monday's simultaneous deployment across New Colony, Patel Nagar, Barf Khana, Dharam Colony, Ashok Vihar-3, Rajendra Park and the Kataria Chowk stretch suggests the civic body tried a wider sweep rather than a single-lane show of force.

Residents in these pockets have long argued that encroached road edges worsen waterlogging and two-wheeler congestion. MCG's public line after the drive was blunt: public roads and footpaths will not be surrendered to illegal construction. Whether the sealed buildings stay closed and the ramps stay gone will depend on how quickly teams revisit the same lanes in the coming weeks.

New Colony Circular Road has seen repeated commercial encroachment complaints because shop fronts compete for every extra foot of road width. Demolishing a large unauthorised commercial building there is a higher-visibility step than sealing alone, because it removes floor space rather than only locking a door. Sealing still matters in Patel Nagar, Barf Khana, Dharam Colony and Ashok Vihar-3, where locked premises signal that the corporation is willing to interrupt business until papers and setbacks are sorted.

Rajendra Park's 100-plus ramp removals target a different problem: low concrete and tiled slopes that look minor until an ambulance or fire tender needs the full lane. Assistant Engineer Hariprakash's team focused on that road-edge clutter while other units handled sealing. Splitting the Monday work across three assistant engineers allowed the corporation to hit several colonies in one day instead of sequencing them over a week.

Dahiya's instruction to keep acting as per rules is standard civic language, but the dated tally from Monday gives residents a checklist to verify on the ground: one demolition, seven sealings, 180-plus ramps gone. If ramps reappear on the same stretches within a fortnight, RWAs will treat the drive as temporary. If they stay clear, the corporation will have a rare visible win on older-colony footpaths.
