Finding a hospital in Varanasi starts with two practical questions: which department is needed, and which campus should you visit? This guide groups 15 hospitals by their role, with localities, ownership and services drawn from hospital websites and official records. The entries are not ranked. Department availability, registration arrangements and scheme coverage should be checked before a planned visit.

Government and private teaching hospitals

Sir Sunderlal Hospital, BHU

Area: BHU campus, Lanka. Type: Government, university teaching hospital. Part of the Institute of Medical Sciences at Banaras Hindu University, Sir Sunderlal Hospital offers general medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, cardiology, neurology and other specialist departments. BHU's published hospital description lists emergency care, intensive care, MRI, CT scanning and dialysis. Its associated facilities include the Centenary Super Speciality Block and a Mother and Child Health Block. Confirm the department and building when arranging an appointment, since services are spread across the hospital complex.

Trauma Centre, IMS-BHU

Area: IMS-BHU, Varanasi. Type: Government, university hospital. The Trauma Centre has a separate hospital identity within the BHU medical system and explicitly advertises 24x7 emergency and trauma care. Its website lists orthopaedics, trauma, general surgery and plastic surgery among its departments. BHU documents identify it as a facility developed under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana. For a planned consultation or follow-up, check the centre's own OPD schedule and confirm the entrance rather than relying on directions to the main hospital alone.

Heritage IMS Hospital

Area: NH-2 bypass, Bhadwar, Mohansarai. Type: Private teaching hospital. This is the hospital attached to Heritage Institute of Medical Sciences, at a different location from Heritage Hospitals in Lanka. Its patient-services page lists outpatient consultations, inpatient care, maternal and child healthcare, MRI and CT imaging. It states that emergency triage, trauma stabilisation and emergency surgery operate round the clock, with an emergency operation theatre attached to casualty. The published emergency and casualty number is 0542-7111071. Confirm the Bhadwar campus when making travel arrangements.

Private multispeciality hospitals

Heritage Hospitals, Lanka

Area: Near the BHU main gate, Malviya Circle, Lanka. Type: Private. The Lanka hospital describes itself as a corporate multidisciplinary hospital. Its own account identifies a dedicated coronary care unit and cardiac catheterisation laboratory, alongside radiology and laboratory services. It also specifies a 128-slice CT scanner with cardiac angiography capability. General wards, private rooms, critical care beds and day care beds are listed in its patient information. The hospital says it does not operate its own dormitory, a useful point for families planning an extended stay.

Apex Hospital

Area: N7/2A-5D, BLW-Hydel Road. Type: Private. Apex lists orthopaedics and trauma, cancer care, cardiology, neurology, general medicine, child care, and urology and nephrology among its services. Its website describes a 300-bed hospital and lists a blood bank, diagnostic centre and in-house pharmacy within its round-the-clock services. Radiation oncology is part of its cancer department. The hospital publishes 9119601990 as a 24/7 helpline. Check the relevant department's consultation schedule separately from the availability of emergency support.

Area: N-10/60, A-2, BLW Road, Kakarmatta. Type: Private. A unit of Popular Medicare Limited, this hospital lists cardiology, neurosurgery, gastroenterology, nephrology, oncology, urology, and general and laparoscopic surgery. Kidney services include dialysis, and the website also lists burns and plastic surgery. Its patient information identifies an in-house pharmacy operating 24/7 and pathological investigations. The group has several locations, including another hospital in Sigra, so specify the Kakarmatta branch when booking or asking about a particular service.

Galaxy Hospital

Galaxy offers cardiology, neurosurgery, general medicine, kidney care and orthopaedic services, and its website states that emergency care is available 24x7. That scope includes interventional cardiology, dialysis, joint replacement, CT scanning and an ambulance service. The hospital's website also lists MRI and a cardiac catheterisation laboratory.

Its website states that emergency services and critical care operate round the clock. Published facilities include modular operation theatres, robotic knee replacement and an ambulance service. The hospital's ICU information lists ventilators, continuous monitoring and bedside diagnostics. For outpatient visits, its contact page gives a separate appointments help desk operating from 9 am to 6 pm; confirm the consultant's actual clinic session before travelling.

Shubham Hospital

Area: S-8/108-F-5A, Maqbool Alam Road, Khajuri. Type: Private. Official ESIC records identify Shubham as a private company hospital and list cardiology, cardiothoracic and vascular surgery, gastroenterology, nephrology, neurology, urology and radiology among its services. Its own patient website advertises 24x7 emergency services, pathology and a pharmacy, with separate information for outpatient registration and inpatient admission. The hospital publishes 7309333333 for emergency help. Anyone using an institutional referral should check current authorisation rather than assuming an older empanelment document remains valid.

Area: Rohaniya-BLW Road, near Rohania Thana, Balirampur, Govindpur. Type: Private. Anant is a unit of Aloak Lifecare Services Private Limited. Its website describes a 100-bed hospital offering general medicine, surgery, cardiology, nephrology with dialysis, neurology, neurosurgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics and orthopaedics, including joint replacement. Listed diagnostic facilities include CT scanning, digital X-ray, ultrasound and EEG/NCV testing. The precise road address is useful when arranging transport, since official records also use the broader locality name Rohaniya Bazaar.

Registration and medical social services are listed on the ground floor. Confirm the Lahartara site when arranging a visit.

Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya Cancer Centre

Area: Sundar Bagiya, BHU campus. Type: Government-supported, Tata Memorial Centre. This is a separate site from the Lahartara cancer hospital. Its published layout identifies outpatient consultations, emergency care, intensive care, radiodiagnosis and day care services in the diagnostic and treatment block. Before you go

Carry a government photo ID, previous prescriptions, investigation reports, discharge summaries and any referral letter. Bring your Ayushman card or insurance documents if you plan to use them. Before planned treatment, check current empanelment, eligibility, the covered procedure and any approval requirements with the hospital's scheme or insurance desk.

Confirm the department's OPD day, registration opening time, token cut-off and whether an appointment is required. For follow-up visits, keep the hospital registration number available. Check the exact campus and building, especially for BHU and hospitals with multiple branches.

For emergency ambulance assistance in Uttar Pradesh, dial 108. For integrated emergency assistance, including police, fire and health services, dial 112.
