Varanasi, June 21, 2026: A major fire at GAIL's storage yard near Karkhiyaon industrial area caused panic late Friday night, but no loss of life was reported. Fire teams worked for more than three hours to bring the blaze under control and prevent it from spreading towards the nearby CNG station.

Fire Broke Out Near CNG Pump

According to reports, the fire started in a storage area containing MDPE pipes and other materials near GAIL's CNG pump at Karkhiyaon on the Varanasi-Lucknow highway. The site falls under Phulpur police station limits and is located in one of the district's important industrial belts.

GAIL said in a public update that an external spark during a storm was suspected to have ignited material in the storage area at around 9:15 p.m. Local reports also pointed to the possibility of an electrical short circuit. The exact cause will depend on the company's assessment and official fire inquiry.

Highway Lane Stopped For Safety

The intensity of the flames forced authorities to take safety precautions on the highway. Reports said movement on one lane was stopped while firefighting operations were underway. This helped keep vehicles away from the affected area and gave fire teams space to work.

Fire tenders from the district and nearby areas were pressed into service. Hydrants and industrial resources around Karkhiyaon were also used as firefighters tried to stop the flames from advancing towards the fuel facility.

No Casualties Reported

Officials reported no injury or loss of human life. GAIL's public update said there was no damage to the CNG station facilities. However, pipes and material kept in the storage yard were reportedly damaged, and the financial loss was being assessed.

The response focused on containing the fire within the storage yard. Fire officials were quoted in reports as saying that a wider accident could have occurred if the flames had reached the CNG station.

Why It Matters

Karkhiyaon has emerged as a significant industrial area for Varanasi and eastern Uttar Pradesh. A fire near fuel and gas infrastructure raises serious safety concerns, even when there are no casualties.

The incident underlines the need for regular safety audits, clear emergency access routes, trained staff and quick coordination between industrial units, fire teams and police. For residents and commuters, the most important immediate relief is that the fire was contained and no lives were lost.
