Manikarnika Ghat Row: Police Probe Viral Images, Misinformation Angle Under Scanner.

Varanasi’s Manikarnika Ghat, one of the holiest cremation grounds in the country, has recently come under intense public and administrative focus following the circulation of viral images on social media.

The posts alleged damage to Hindu idols and religious structures during ongoing beautification work, triggering emotional reactions and public protests. As the issue gained traction, authorities moved swiftly to verify the claims and assess the ground reality. Police investigations have found that a large number of viral posts carried strikingly similar images and identical wording, raising concerns about coordinated dissemination.

This prompted investigators to initiate a digital footprint analysis to trace the origin of the first post. Officials have clarified that the inquiry is not limited to the content of the images alone but also focuses on the intent and timing behind their circulation. During site inspections, including the presence of investigating officers, religious activities were observed at locations that were claimed online to have been damaged.

The matter is also being examined in the context of the ongoing Dalmandi road-widening and development project, where large-scale encroachment removal and demolition are underway as part of a government-backed infrastructure initiative.

While no conclusions have been drawn, authorities are assessing whether the Manikarnika controversy was amplified to create pressure against development work. Meanwhile, law enforcement has maintained that its actions are aimed at ensuring public order, protecting religious sentiments, and preventing misinformation.

Officials have reiterated that any findings of deliberate misinformation or conspiracy will be dealt with strictly under the law, while development and religious harmony will continue to be safeguarded side by side.
