Manikarnika Ghat redevelopment controversy draws PMO and CMO attention after viral video sparks heritage concerns

VARANASI: The controversy surrounding the redevelopment of the Maha-Shamshan Manikarnika Ghat has reached the highest levels of government. Both the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) and the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) have taken cognizance of the situation, directing the local administration to ensure that heritage is strictly preserved alongside development work.
The Trigger: The intervention came after a video went viral showing the alleged disrespect of Queen Ahilyabai Holkar's statue and the demolition of an ancient Madhi (platform) by bulldozers on Tuesday. The debris scattering over intricate carvings sparked outrage.
Administrative Assurance: Following the directive, District Magistrate Satyendra Kumar reiterated that the statue of Ahilyabai Holkar and other antiquities have not been damaged.
"All statues have been safely stored in the Culture Department's premises. They will be reinstalled with full honor at their original spots once the redevelopment is complete," the DM stated.
Political Heat: The issue has turned into a major political flashpoint:
Mallikarjun Kharge (Congress): Accused the PM of wanting to erase history to put up his own "nameplate."
Akhilesh Yadav (SP): Warned that "Indestructible Kashi" would become the cause of BJP's destruction, calling the act a disrespect to Sanatan heritage.
Holkar Dynasty: Yashwant Rao III, a representative of the Holkar dynasty, also visited the site and expressed concern to the Commissioner.
Project Facts: The ₹18 Crore redevelopment project is being funded via CSR by the Rupa Foundation and is targeted for completion by June 2026.
