Manikarnika Ghat Controversy: Varanasi Mayor Calls Temple Damage Allegations Political

Varanasi: Amid controversy over development work at Manikarnika Ghat, Mayor Ashok Kumar Tiwari on Friday clarified that no temple or heritage structure has been damaged during the project. He said all construction work is being carried out in a planned manner, following religious traditions and norms.
The mayor, along with South Varanasi MLA Dr Neelkanth Tiwari and Municipal Commissioner Himanshu Nagpal, inspected the ghat after allegations were raised about the breaking of a statue of Queen Ahilyabai Holkar. Officials stated that the statue has been safely preserved and will be reinstalled after the completion of the project.
Mayor Tiwari said claims of temple demolition are politically motivated. He recalled similar opposition during the development of the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor and said no heritage was harmed there either. “If anyone has proof of damage to heritage, they should present it,” he said.
He appealed to political groups not to spread misinformation or divide the Sanatan community. The mayor also highlighted the need for development at Manikarnika Ghat, citing the lack of basic facilities such as seating areas and toilets for visitors and families performing last rites.
Officials assured that the Kumbha Mahadev Temple remains in its original place, with Nandi and Ganesh idols completely safe and regular worship continuing. Local priests and residents met the inspection team and urged that the sanctity of the cremation ghat and its heritage be preserved.
The Manikarnika Ghat development project is being carried out under the guidance of the Prime Minister and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, officials said, adding that any shortcomings in the work will be addressed.
