The ongoing road widening work in the Dalmandi area of Varanasi has been temporarily halted for two days in view of the upcoming Makar Sankranti festival, according to local administration officials.
The demolition drive, which began as part of the Dalmandi road widening project, was paused to ensure smooth law and order arrangements and to avoid inconvenience during the festive period.
Officials stated that the decision was taken keeping public movement, religious sensitivity, and crowd management in mind.
The Dalmandi project aims to widen a narrow and congested stretch to improve traffic flow and connectivity in the old city area. In recent days, the demolition action had drawn attention due to its impact on local shops, residential structures, and the broader discussions surrounding properties falling within the project’s alignment.
While the administration maintains that the project is essential for long-term urban planning and traffic management, affected shopkeepers and residents have raised concerns regarding notice, compensation, and rehabilitation procedures.
The temporary halt, however, does not indicate a cancellation of the project.
Authorities have clarified that the pause is strictly for the festival period and that further action will be reviewed after Makar Sankranti.
At present, there is no official announcement on whether any changes will be made to the execution plan once the demolition drive resumes.
Stakeholders continue to seek clarity on timelines, compensation mechanisms, and the next phase of the project.
The situation remains under observation, with further updates expected after the two-day pause.
