Kashi–Vindhya Region Gets $600-Billion Economy Roadmap for 2047

VARANASI — A new planning roadmap places Varanasi at the centre of a seven-district Kashi–Vindhya economic region that officials want to grow into a $600-billion economy by 2047. The headline number is enormous; the more immediate test will be whether it can be translated into district-level projects, credible budgets and jobs that local people can actually access.

The plan was presented at a high-level review meeting in Varanasi chaired by NITI Aayog Vice-Chairman Dr Ashok Kumar Lahiri. Varanasi Development Authority Vice-Chairman Pulkit Garg presented the development model to senior officials from the district and divisional administration.

The proposed region has an estimated population of 23 million. Officials said it currently contributes about $24 billion, or 7.7 per cent, to Uttar Pradesh's gross domestic product. The 2047 target therefore represents a dramatic expansion over two decades and will require far more than a few flagship projects in central Varanasi.

WHERE THE PLAN EXPECTS GROWTH

The roadmap identifies manufacturing, logistics, energy, agriculture and tourism as major growth engines. It also speaks of premium hotels, stronger transport and supply networks, and between five lakh and seven lakh new jobs. Water conservation, fisheries, forestry, basic education, public health and nutrition have been included in the presentation, signalling that the region's social indicators are being treated as part of its economic capacity.

That wider frame is important. Varanasi's visitor economy is highly visible, but the Kashi–Vindhya belt cannot reach an ambitious output target on pilgrimage and hospitality alone. Food processing, reliable electricity, warehousing, rural roads, industrial land and skilled workers will determine whether growth spreads beyond a few corridors.

The review also covered rural development work being measured on 76 indicators. Chief Development Officer Prakhar Kumar Singh made that presentation, while the NITI Aayog vice-chairman suggested a follow-up system for anaemia patients modelled on tuberculosis monitoring, including phone reminders to help patients take medicines on time.

TARGETS NEED PUBLIC MILESTONES

Residents should read the $600-billion figure as a planning ambition, not as money already approved or investment already secured. Officials have not yet published a district-wise capital plan, annual job targets or a financing split between governments and private investors. Those details will decide whether the roadmap becomes a working programme.

A serious next step would be a public dashboard showing projects, deadlines, land requirements, environmental approvals and employment outcomes. Varanasi also needs safeguards so that infrastructure expansion does not treat dense neighbourhoods, river ecology or small businesses as afterthoughts.

Divisional Commissioner S Rajalingam, District Magistrate Satyendra Kumar and Municipal Commissioner Himanshu Nagpal were among the officials reported at the meeting. The administration now has a large number to defend. Its credibility will come from smaller, visible milestones: a logistics bottleneck removed, a health gap narrowed, a factory connected, a farmer paid better, and a young worker trained for a job that exists.
