Rs 79,900 or Rs 55,999? That is the choice in front of anyone who wants a "sensible" phone from Apple or Google this Diwali. The iPhone 17e is the cheapest current iPhone on Apple's India store, and the Pixel 10a is Google's most affordable Pixel. Both are official store prices, price as of 6 October 2026, 1:35 AM IST.

The gap is Rs 23,900. Here is what that money does and does not buy, using only the specifications Apple and Google list on their India pages.

Price and storage, side by side

The iPhone 17e on Apple India starts at Rs 79,900 with 256GB of storage. The 512GB model costs Rs 1,04,900. The Pixel 10a on the Google Store comes in one 256GB version at Rs 55,999.

So at the same 256GB, the Pixel is Rs 23,900 cheaper. Both stores also list bank offers. Google shows instant cashback of up to Rs 3,000 on HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank credit card EMI. Apple's India store mentions instant cashback of up to Rs 7,000 on selected models with eligible cards, so check at checkout whether the 17e is one of them on the day you buy.

One more piece of context: the Pixel 10a launched at Rs 49,999 in February, so its store price is now higher than at launch. The iPhone 17e is also not cheap by Indian mid-range standards. Neither is a festive bargain at list price.

Screen and design

Apple lists a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display on the iPhone 17e. Its comparison chart shows no ProMotion high refresh rate, no Always-On display and no Dynamic Island on this model. It has an aluminium frame and an Action button, but not the Camera Control button found on the iPhone 17.

Google lists a 6.3-inch Actua display on the Pixel 10a, and its launch post said peak brightness reaches 3,000 nits. The phone has a flat back with a camera bar that sits flush, IP68 water and dust protection and Gorilla Glass 7i.

If you watch a lot of video or read on your phone, the bigger Pixel screen is the obvious difference. If you prefer a smaller phone, the 17e is the more compact of the two.

Cameras

This is where the two phones split clearly. The iPhone 17e has a single 48MP Fusion rear camera, with 1x and 2x zoom options in Apple's chart, and a 12MP TrueDepth front camera. There is no ultra wide lens.

The Pixel 10a has two rear cameras: a 48MP main and a 13MP ultrawide, plus a 13MP front camera. Google also brings features like Macro Focus, Night Sight, Auto Best Take and Camera Coach to the phone, according to its launch post.

The front cameras differ too. Apple's chart shows the 17e without Centre Stage for photos and video calls and without Dual Capture, features the iPhone 17 does have. It also shows no macro photography on the 17e, while Google lists Macro Focus on the Pixel 10a. The 17e does get Apple's next-generation portraits with Focus and Depth Control.

For group photos in a small room, wedding halls and landscape shots on a family trip, an ultra wide lens is genuinely useful. On paper, the Pixel offers more camera flexibility for less money.

Chip, battery and software

Apple's 17e runs the A19 chip with a 6-core CPU and 4-core GPU, one GPU core fewer than the iPhone 17's A19. Apple quotes up to 26 hours of video playback.

The Pixel 10a uses Google's Tensor G4 with 8GB of RAM. Google quotes more than 30 hours of battery life, or up to 120 hours with Extreme Battery Saver. Note that Apple and Google measure battery life differently, so the two figures are not a like-for-like test.

On software, Google promises seven years of OS and security updates and Pixel Drops for the 10a. Apple does not print a fixed number of years on the store page, though iPhones have historically received long support. Both phones support their makers' AI features: Apple Intelligence on the 17e, and Gemini on the Pixel.

Mixed families get one useful detail from Google's launch post: Quick Share on the Pixel 10a works with AirDrop, so sharing photos with iPhone-using relatives is easier than it used to be. That weakens one old argument for staying with the iPhone just to share pictures at family functions.

Who should buy which

Pick the iPhone 17e if you already live in Apple's world. An Apple Watch, a Mac, iCloud photos and family members on iMessage and FaceTime count for a lot, and switching costs time. The 17e is also the cheapest way into a new iPhone with the A19 chip.

Pick the Pixel 10a if you want the most phone for the money between these two. You get a larger screen, an extra ultrawide camera, IP68 and a written seven-year update promise for Rs 23,900 less.
