India Post Offers ₹10 Waterproof Rakhi Envelopes and Sunday Counters in Varanasi Region

VARANASI: India Post has introduced a ₹10 waterproof envelope for Rakhi mail in the Varanasi region, alongside a 10 per cent discount on Speed Post charges and extended Sunday booking before Raksha Bandhan.
The envelope is designed to carry a rakhi along with small quantities of roli and akshat while protecting the contents from rain and moisture. That is a practical feature in a monsoon month, when an ordinary paper envelope can soften or tear during multiple stages of sorting and transport. Customers must still seal and address it carefully; “waterproof” does not protect against an incomplete address or loose closure.
Varanasi Region Postmaster General Padmagandha Mishra said booking counters across the region’s five divisions would remain open on Sundays until the festival. The divisions named on the envelope include Varanasi East, Varanasi West, Ghazipur, Jaunpur and Ballia. Contact numbers for the divisions are printed on the reverse, and digital payments are available at the counters.
The front carries a festival slogan and a dedicated area for the destination address. Senders should write the recipient’s full name, house or flat number, street or village, post office, district, state, PIN code and a working mobile number. A complete return address is equally important because it allows the item to come back if delivery is not possible.
The 10 per cent discount applies to sending the special envelope through Speed Post, according to the postal announcement. Customers should ask the booking clerk for the final charge and keep the printed receipt. The consignment number on that receipt is needed for official tracking; a photograph of the addressed envelope is not a substitute.
Booking early remains the best way to avoid disappointment. Festival mail creates a concentrated rush, and a dispatch made at the last moment can be delayed by transport connections, weather or a destination office’s workload. Senders should check the expected delivery window at the counter, especially for rural addresses or locations outside Uttar Pradesh.
Only appropriate lightweight items should be placed inside. Cash, expensive jewellery and prohibited material should not be slipped into a Rakhi envelope. If a gift of significant value must be sent, customers should ask about the correct registered or insured postal product rather than assuming the decorative envelope changes liability rules.
Sunday counters can reduce queues for students and workers who cannot visit during ordinary weekday hours. The real test will be whether each listed office has the special stock, trained counter staff and clear display of timing. Customers travelling to a smaller branch may wish to call the relevant divisional number first.
For families separated by work, study or migration, the annual Rakhi packet carries more emotion than its weight suggests. India Post’s new envelope addresses a simple but familiar worry: whether that thread will arrive dry, intact and on time. The service helps most when senders do their part—pack neatly, book early and preserve the tracking receipt until delivery is confirmed.
