GMDA Seeks Station-Wise Metro Parking Plans

GURUGRAM: Gurugram Metro Rail Limited has been asked to align the proposed metro corridor with the city's parking, traffic and pedestrian network, with station designs that do not spill private vehicles onto adjoining roads, officials said after a Thursday coordination meeting.

The directions were issued by Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority CEO PC Meena. GMRL has been told to submit a comprehensive parking plan for each station within two weeks. Meena said parking is crucial in a city where a large share of commuters still arrive by private vehicle, and that government land would be provided near stations wherever possible.

Meena directed officials to build adequate pick-up and drop-off facilities into station designs and to treat pedestrian links with the surrounding road network as part of planning, not an afterthought. He also asked teams to safeguard the right of way at relevant locations so future road widening and grade separators remain possible.

Referring to provisions made at Bhaktawar Chowk in Phase I for a possible future underpass, Meena asked GMRL to make similar provisions while planning Phase II. The meeting discussed integrated and double-decker options at Bajghera Chowk, Old Delhi-Gurgaon Road and Sector 21, and possible underpasses at Sectors 3/3A/4/5 Chowk, Sheetla Mata Chowk and Rezangla Chowk, a GMDA spokesperson said.

Meena proposed a joint site visit with GMRL on the proposed alignment along Sushil Aima Marg. He directed that trees along Sushil Kumar Marg should not be cut and that alternatives be explored wherever necessary.

It was also decided that the foot-over-bridges at Sector 37 and Basai would be dismantled and reinstalled at suitable alternative locations. GMRL will dismantle them; GMDA will install them at the new sites. Bus stops affected at Millennium City Centre, Sector 37, Basai and Sector 9 will be relocated to keep metro construction moving without cutting off bus users. A senior GMRL official said parking would be added to station design if local agencies free the land.

Commuters near those four bus stops should watch for temporary shelter shifts once relocation dates are notified. Resident welfare associations along Sushil Kumar Marg have welcomed the no-tree-cutting line and say they will track whether the joint site visit produces a written realignment note rather than an oral assurance.
