GURUGRAM: Work has begun on a Rs 2.11 crore upgrade of the road linking Garhi with Harsaru, a roughly 1.5km Ward 1 project that combines carriageway improvement with footpaths, a paved drain and a dedicated utility duct.

Manesar Mayor Dr Indrajit Kaur Yadav formally started the civic work in the presence of the ward councillor, municipal officials and residents. The road is an everyday connection between the two settlements, so its condition affects far more than through-traffic: pedestrians, local shops, school trips and access to the wider Garhi Harsaru transport network all depend on it.

The strongest feature of the design is that it does not treat resurfacing as the entire project. Footpaths are planned on both sides, with interlocking tiles providing a defined walking strip. A paved drain is intended to move monsoon runoff away from the road, while the utility duct should give power, internet and other service lines a protected corridor.

If built and used correctly, that duct can prevent a common urban failure in which a newly finished road is cut open weeks later for a cable. The benefit depends on accurate mapping and coordination with utility providers. An empty or inaccessible duct will not stop future excavation, and undocumented connections can recreate the same patchwork surface the project is meant to replace.

The work is being undertaken with reference to air-quality management directions. On the ground, that should mean covered construction material, controlled dust, regular sprinkling where appropriate and transport that does not spill soil along the route. Monsoon mud and dry-weather dust are two sides of the same housekeeping problem.

Drain levels require equal attention. A concrete channel can look complete but still fail if individual property ramps block it, inlets sit above the road surface or the final outfall is not connected. Engineers should test the route with water before closing the contract and publish who will desilt it after handover.

During construction, access to homes and shops must be maintained through planned crossings rather than improvised mounds. Pedestrians need a safe side to use, and excavated portions should be barricaded at night. A short link road can become a severe bottleneck if work fronts are opened simultaneously without a traffic plan.

The Rs 2.11 crore sanction is an approved project cost, not proof of a completed asset. Residents will judge the upgrade by the final levels, uninterrupted walking space and whether the first strong shower drains away without damaging the edges. The launch is welcome; disciplined execution will decide whether Garhi and Harsaru receive a durable street rather than another round of repairs.
