The EDLI claim process begins with establishing that an eligible EPF member died while in service and identifying the nominee or other person entitled to the insurance benefit. The official EPFO website provides a death claim route for nominees. Insurance can be up to Rs 7 lakh, but that figure is a ceiling, not an amount every family will receive.

The EPFO insurance summary and a PIB backgrounder dated 31 October 2026 both state the Rs 7 lakh maximum. PIB says the Employees' Deposit Linked Insurance Scheme, 2026 replaced the 1976 scheme under the Social Security Code. This guide was checked on 4 November 2026; families should ask EPFO to confirm the rules applicable to the member's case.

EDLI claim eligibility: who receives the money?

EPFO describes EDLI as linked to EPF membership, with automatic membership for covered EPF employees. The insurance summary identifies nominees and legal heirs as beneficiaries. Its explanation of coverage makes death during service the central condition. Having an old PF balance after leaving employment does not by itself establish an EDLI entitlement.

A family should therefore separate two questions: whether money remains in the provident fund account, and whether the death meets the insurance scheme's conditions. A PF balance is an accumulated saving. EDLI is an assurance benefit governed by insurance rules. Pension benefits, where applicable, are another part of the social security system with their own claim requirements.

The public member portal says nominations can be filed and updated during the service period. It also offers separate links labelled death claim filing by nominee for claims and pension. That distinction matters when preparing a bereavement claim: completing one route should not be assumed to settle every other benefit automatically. Ask the office which applications are needed for the particular family.

Does every EDLI claimant get Rs 7 lakh?

No. The current official summary describes the benefit as depending on the employee's salary and EPF balance. The maximum is an upper limit. The actual admissible amount needs EPFO's assessment of the relevant records and rules. This guide does not quote a universal minimum or provide a calculator because those can conceal conditions important to an individual claim.

There is also a reason to check the date of any information found online. The official insurance page's older FAQ text still mentions a Rs 6 lakh maximum, while the main summary and the dated October 2026 PIB backgrounder state up to Rs 7 lakh. The more recent dated government confirmation supports the ceiling used here. A claimant facing a different calculation should request the applicable provision and a written explanation.

The employee does not need to buy a separate EDLI premium to access the scheme's protection. EPFO describes the scheme as employer funded. That does not turn the maximum insurance benefit into money that can be withdrawn during ordinary employment, nor does it replace a death claim by an eligible claimant.

How to start an EDLI death claim on the official portal

Open the official EPFO member portal through the organisation's website. Locate the death claim filing option for nominees and read the instructions presented there before proceeding. Use the designated claimant route. Do not assume that an ordinary member withdrawal application is the correct form for a bereavement claim.

For preparation, assemble the available UAN or PF account details, death certificate, nomination or relationship records, claimant identity and bank information, and employment records held by the family. Treat this as an organising checklist, not a universal list of compulsory uploads. The live application and the responsible EPFO office must confirm the documents, certification and claim channel required for that case.

If the nomination is missing, family details are disputed, or the online route does not fit the case, ask the concerned office to identify the correct claimant procedure. Do not select an inaccurate relationship merely to move through a form. Keep copies of whatever is submitted, together with the acknowledgement and any written request for further evidence.

EDLI claim status, settlement time and helpline

EPFO's summary states that claims are settled within 20 days. This is a service timeline, not a deadline to apply and not a guarantee that an incomplete or disputed application will be paid by that date. No universal filing cut off is established by the summary reviewed. Obtain case specific guidance promptly rather than assuming a claim can be left indefinitely.

For a pending claim, use the acknowledgement when seeking an update. The official contact page lists the toll free helpdesk 14470 and directs grievances to EPFiGMS. It says applicants can track grievances using their reference number. A grievance reference and a benefit claim acknowledgement serve different purposes; retain both where relevant.
