Congress Stages Sit-In at Gandhi Statue Over Manikarnika Ghat ‘Demolition’, Submits Memorandum to SDM

Varanasi, January 19, 2026: Escalating their protest over the Manikarnika Ghat controversy, members of the District and City Congress Committees staged a sit-in demonstration on Monday, alleging the demolition of the historic Manikarnika Ghat in Varanasi.
The protest was led by senior Congress office bearers and witnessed the participation of several party workers. The demonstrators gathered at the Gandhi Statue located inside the Municipal Council (Nagar Palika Parishad) premises, raising slogans against the administration and accusing it of damaging the city’s centuries-old heritage.
Protest Against ‘Heritage Destruction’
Congress leaders alleged that ancient structures at Manikarnika Ghat were being destroyed in the name of redevelopment. They expressed strong resentment over the alleged damage to the legacy of Queen Ahilyabai Holkar, whom they described as a revered guardian of India’s cultural and religious heritage.
The protesters demanded that all activities leading to the destruction of ancient structures be immediately halted and those responsible be held accountable.
Memorandum Submitted to SDM
Following the demonstration, a Congress delegation submitted a formal memorandum (gyapan) to the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM). The memorandum urged the administration to protect the historical and religious character of Manikarnika Ghat and ensure transparency in redevelopment works.
Party leaders warned that if corrective measures are not taken, the agitation will be intensified in the coming days.
The Manikarnika Ghat redevelopment project continues to remain at the center of political debate, with the administration maintaining that no heritage structure is being damaged, while the opposition alleges otherwise.
