Coal Prices Rise in Varanasi Amid LPG Shortage

Coal prices in Varanasi have witnessed a noticeable rise over the past few days, adding to the concerns of small vendors and eateries that depend on coal for daily cooking. According to local traders and shopkeepers, the retail price of coal has increased by around ₹5 per kilogram within the last four to five days.

Earlier, coal was being sold at approximately ₹22 per kilogram in local markets. However, due to a sudden increase in demand, the price has now reached nearly ₹27 per kilogram in several areas of the city. Vendors say the demand for coal has risen as many tea stalls, food vendors, and small restaurants have temporarily shifted to coal stoves due to difficulties in obtaining LPG cylinders.

Local tea sellers and street food vendors say the rising fuel cost is affecting their daily expenses. While most of them have not yet increased the prices of tea or snacks, they admit that the growing cost of coal may eventually force them to adjust their rates if the situation continues.

Traders believe that the spike in coal demand is directly linked to the current shortage and delayed supply of LPG cylinders in the market. As more small businesses look for alternative cooking fuel, coal has once again become a widely used option.

Market observers say that if LPG supply improves in the coming days, coal prices may stabilize. However, if the demand continues at the current pace, prices could remain elevated for some time.
