Clothes Drying Fight Turns Deadly: Young Mother Dies After Rooftop Fall in Varanasi

Varanasi: A tragic incident occurred in the Shivpur police station area of Varanasi, where a dispute over drying clothes on a rooftop escalated into a deadly confrontation between two women. The incident resulted in the death of a 22-year-old woman, while another woman sustained serious injuries.
According to police, the argument began when two women living in the same rented house got into a heated quarrel over using the rooftop to dry clothes. The verbal dispute soon turned violent, with both women allegedly throwing clothes at each other and engaging in a physical altercation. During the scuffle, one woman pushed the other. As she fell, the victim reportedly grabbed the other woman’s sari in an attempt to save herself, causing both of them to fall from the second floor of the building.
After the fall, both women were critically injured. Hearing the noise, local residents rushed to the spot and informed the police. By the time help arrived, one woman had succumbed to her injuries, while the other was found severely injured with fractures in her waist, arms, and legs. She was immediately admitted to the district hospital for treatment.
The deceased has been identified as Jyoti Prajapati (22), wife of Tej Bahadur. The couple lived in a rented house in Hatiya village of Murdaha market along with their two daughters, including a two-month-old infant. The injured woman, identified as Shamsul Begum alias Suman, was also residing in the same building. Locals said that disputes between the two women over drying clothes on the rooftop were frequent.
Jyoti’s husband told the police that the argument broke out on Saturday evening when both women went to the rooftop at the same time. What began as a verbal exchange soon turned into a physical fight, leading to the fatal fall.
Police reached the spot soon after receiving information and sent Jyoti’s body for postmortem examination. Preliminary findings suggest that she suffered a severe head injury, which caused her death on the spot. Meanwhile, the injured woman remains under medical care.
After the incident, Jyoti’s husband was seen in deep distress, struggling to cope with the loss while caring for his young daughters. Neighbors described Jyoti as a friendly and calm person, while alleging that tensions often arose between the two women.
Shivpur Station House Officer Virendra Kumar Sonkar said that an FIR has been registered against the accused woman based on the complaint filed by the victim’s husband. The matter is under investigation, and further legal action will be taken after the completion of medical and legal procedures.
