Android phone users in India should check for security updates after the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team, CERT-In, issued a high-severity warning on 6 October 2026. Its vulnerability note covers Android 14, 15, 16, the 16-qpr2 release and Android 17, and directs users to install the appropriate vendor updates. Read CERT-In's warning.

The agency says the flaws could let attackers access sensitive information, gain higher system permissions, run unauthorised code or disrupt a device. Those are possible consequences of successful exploitation. The notice does not establish that an individual reader's phone has been compromised, and it gives no single update deadline for consumers. Which security patch should you look for?

Google's October Android security bulletin, which CERT-In links to, was published on 5 October and updated on 8 October. It says a security patch level of 1 October 2026 or later, displayed in the bulletin as 2026-10-01, addresses the issues it lists. This is the date to check in your phone's security update information. Google's October bulletin.

The bulletin includes a critical System flaw that could give an attacker higher privileges locally without the user interacting with it. It also describes a critical Framework issue that could remotely disrupt service without user interaction. The different attack conditions matter: the bulletin does not describe every listed flaw as a way to take over any phone remotely. Android vulnerability details.

The practical implication is to check the installed patch date alongside the Android version. Having a listed Android version tells you to investigate; the patch information tells you whether the fixes described in this bulletin have been included. An October patch date is not a guarantee against every possible security problem.

How to check and install an update

Start in Settings, then open About phone or About tablet, followed by Android version. Google's instructions say this screen shows the Android version, Android security update, Google Play system update and build number. Read the security update entry carefully. The separate Google Play system entry is another item to check. Google's Android update guide.

To look for available software, Google's general route is Settings > System > Software updates. Follow the instructions shown by the device. Before starting, Google recommends connecting to Wi-Fi and charging the battery to at least 75%, because an update can be large and take time. Android update instructions.

Galaxy owners may see different wording. Samsung India's support page lists Settings > Software update > Download and install among its routes. Some models instead show Check for updates or place the option under About device. Samsung says the menus depend on the model and operating system, so a different label does not itself mean updates are unavailable. Samsung India's update instructions.

Complete any restart requested during installation. Google says downloaded updates on Pixel phones become active after a restart; many other Android devices restart during installation. Once installation finishes, return to the security information and check the date again. Google's installation guidance.

Keep Google Play Protect enabled as well. Google says it checks apps for harmful behaviour and can warn about, disable or remove harmful software. To review the setting, open the Play Store, tap your profile icon, then Play Protect > Settings, and check that Scan apps with Play Protect is on. Treat this as an additional precaution alongside installing the system fixes. Google Play Protect guidance.

What if your phone has no update yet?

There is no common delivery date for every Android handset. Google's help page says schedules vary with the device, manufacturer and mobile carrier. If nothing is offered, check your manufacturer's official support information for your exact model and revisit the update screen. Android update availability.

Samsung, for example, lists selected devices on monthly, quarterly or twice-yearly security schedules. It also says delivery can vary by region and model. A published security bulletin therefore does not prove that every Indian handset has already received its update. Samsung's support list is useful for checking a model's update frequency, but it is not confirmation that a particular phone has installed October's fixes. Samsung's security update scope.

For buyers comparing Samsung Week phone offers or Galaxy phone deals on Amazon, add security support to the purchase checklist. Check the manufacturer's policy for the exact model, then check for updates during setup. For an existing phone, start with the same practical step today: open Settings and see which security patch is installed.
