boAt Airdopes Prime 800D brings Crest AI assistant to Rs 1,999 earbuds

NOIDA: boAt has put a Gemini-backed assistant into a mass-market earbud. The Airdopes Prime 800D is the first device in the company’s Crest AI lineup, selling at Rs 1,999 in Raven Black and Royal Blue through Amazon India and boat-lifestyle.com.

Crest AI is also enabled on the Airdopes Prime 701 ANC and Nirvana Ion ANC, according to the company, with more Crest-capable models promised later. The strategic bet is clear: keep the hardware in the familiar sub-Rs 2,000 band, then upsell an always-on voice layer people already wear.

Crest AI features on the earbuds

Crest AI is built with Google Gemini and is activated with a long-press on compatible boAt gear. On the Prime 800D, the company highlights G-Assist for Gmail, Tasks and Calendar-style actions, Crest Ask for open questions, and Crest Translate for live translation across more than 25 languages.

boAt’s Crest AI product page lists G-Assist, Crest Translate, Crest Ask, device control and related tools, and says a 12-month Crest AI plan with 1,00,000 AI units ships with supported devices. Activation runs through the Hearables app: connect over Bluetooth, open Crest AI, then verify the serial number on the case or box. The firm says AI features are designed not to retain personal data, and that unused credits expire with the plan window.

Buyers should treat assistant quality as variable. boAt itself notes that AI answers can be wrong and that important information should be checked independently. Offline behaviour, Indian-language depth beyond the translate pitch, and how often the earbuds fall back to the phone’s data radio will show up only after weeks of commuting use.

Audio specs, battery and where to buy

Away from the AI layer, the Prime 800D uses 11 mm drivers tuned to boAt Signature Sound, with Dolby Audio, a HiFi DSP core and 24-bit spatial audio on the spec sheet. Four AI-ENx microphones handle calls. Adaptive EQ can reshape output using a hearing profile. Google Fast Pair, in-ear detection and multipoint connectivity are included, and the Hearables app covers touch remaps, diagnostics and firmware.

Battery claims are 45 hours of total playback at 60 per cent volume. Each bud holds a 50 mAh cell; the case is rated 500 mAh. A full bud charge is listed at about 30 minutes, the case at about 1.5 hours, with ASAP Charge promising up to four hours from a 10-minute top-up. The buds carry an IPX5 water-resistance rating.

At Rs 1,999, the Prime 800D is less a flagship audio instrument than a distribution play for Crest AI. If the assistant reliably drafts a calendar block or translates a railway announcement without fumbling, boAt gains a sticky software reason to repurchase. If it mostly suggests users open the phone app, the product falls back to being another Dolby-branded twin-bud set in a crowded aisle. Indian TWS buyers already know the pattern: launch on Amazon, lead with battery hours, add a branded DSP story, then compete on colourways. Crest AI is boAt’s attempt to break that loop with a software habit. Long-press to ask a question or translate a phrase is a lower friction move than unlocking a phone, provided the wake gesture is reliable on a crowded metro platform.

There is a commercial angle too. A 12-month entitlement with a capped unit pool trains users to expect an assistant on their earbuds, then creates a renewal discussion when the credits run out. That only works if Crest AI is good enough that people notice when it disappears.

Competing audio brands are also wiring large-model assistants into wearables. boAt’s advantage is distribution and price. Its risk is that a Rs 1,999 bud becomes the weak link in a Gemini-quality promise—microphones that smear speech, touch controls that misfire, or an app flow that asks for one too many permissions. The hardware sheet is already public; the software reputation will be written in return reviews over the next month.
