Banaras Hindu University has opened applications for PhD admissions for the 2026-27 session. Candidates can apply online through the university's admission portal until 21 October, and the university is preparing to admit about 1,500 scholars who have cleared NET or JRF.
The online process went live late on Tuesday night, giving applicants a window of 15 days. After the closing date, candidates get two more days, 22 and 23 October, to correct errors in their forms. The university has laid out the whole path from application to joining as a programme of about two months.
The next dates follow in sequence. Call letters for the interview can be downloaded between 29 and 31 October. Interviews will be held in the concerned departments, centres and schools from 12 to 19 November, and the verification of original documents will take place during the same days. Results will be released in phases from 25 November to 15 December. Selected candidates must report to their department, centre or school on 16 December to complete admission.
Candidates can enter through three routes, as in earlier years: JRF, NET and direct admission. The JRF route is for those who hold a Junior Research Fellowship from recognised national agencies such as the UGC, CSIR, ICMR and DBT. Eligibility rules, seats and other conditions are given in the information bulletin issued by the university, and the Controller of Examinations' office has asked applicants to keep checking the official admission portal for changes or fresh notices.
Admissions this year will be held across 16 faculties. They are agricultural sciences, arts, Ayurveda, commerce, dental sciences, education, environment and sustainable development, law, management studies, medicine, performing arts, Sanskrit vidya dharma vigyan, science, social sciences, veterinary and animal sciences, and visual arts.
The fees fixed for full-time PhD scholars are a one-time registration fee of Rs 2,500 and Rs 2,000 for each semester, made up of Rs 1,000 as academic fee and Rs 1,000 as development fee. For external PhD candidates, the notice sets a registration fee of Rs 10,000 and Rs 4,000 per semester over the six-year course, with Rs 5,000 for registration as stated in the same notice. Candidates should check the bulletin to see exactly which of these applies to them.
The sequence matters for applicants. The form must be submitted by 21 October, and the 22 and 23 October window is for corrections. Original documents will be checked during the interview days, so they should be ready by then.
Other recent news from the campus includes the formation of a committee for student groups, as we reported in the story on the BHU coordination committee for student groups' grievances and a research report on the BHU researcher's lamp-soot lead sensor.
Scholars from outside Varanasi should keep the call-letter window of 29 to 31 October and the interview dates of 12 to 19 November in mind. Changes, if any, will be put up on the admission portal.
