The situation at Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi has intensified after a junior doctor from the surgery department allegedly attempted suicide, reportedly due to harassment.

Junior doctors continued their protest and surrounded the hospital director, demanding immediate action against those responsible. The Junior Doctors’ Association has issued a 24-hour ultimatum, warning that if concrete steps are not taken, they will go on an indefinite strike. They added that while emergency and ICU services may continue, other hospital services could be suspended.

The association’s president, Dr. Ambuj, stated that strict disciplinary action, including suspension or expulsion, must be taken against those found responsible. They have also demanded a fair and transparent investigation, inclusion of resident doctors in the inquiry committee, and regular updates on the probe.

The Vice-Chancellor, Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi, visited the hospital to check on the condition of the junior doctor, who is currently under treatment. According to reports, the doctor’s condition deteriorated after allegedly taking a high dose of insulin.

Doctors have also raised broader concerns, including toxic work culture, long working hours, and the need for increased staffing. They are demanding implementation of work-hour regulations in line with National Medical Commission guidelines and stricter measures to prevent workplace harassment and ragging.
