Belden to make RUCKUS ICX network switches at its Pune plant

The enterprise switches that run office and campus networks under the RUCKUS name will now be made in Pune. Belden Inc., the US connectivity company that owns RUCKUS Networks, said it will manufacture select RUCKUS ICX Ethernet switches at its existing Pune facility.

The announcement, made on 24 September in the US, is the first concrete move Belden has shown since folding RUCKUS into its business. It describes the Pune line as an early example of using Belden's global manufacturing footprint to support the RUCKUS portfolio instead of building parallel operations.

From R&D base to factory floor

RUCKUS already has a sizeable presence in India. Bengaluru is its largest global site for research and development and for customer success, and the company runs a research and design centre in Chennai in collaboration with the IIT Madras Research Park. Belden, separately, operates a Customer Innovation Center in Bengaluru and manufacturing capacity in Pune.

Putting ICX production into the Pune plant ties those pieces together. Belden says the result is a more connected presence across innovation, customer engagement and operations, and a "more scalable local model" for serving customers and partners in India.

ICX is RUCKUS' line of Ethernet switches used in enterprise, education, hospitality and government networks. Belden has not said which ICX models will be made first, what the production capacity is or how much it is investing. It has also not said whether Pune-made units will be exported or sold only in India.

"Manufacturing the RUCKUS ICX Ethernet in India is an early example of that strategy in action," said Dr Ashish Chand, President and CEO of Belden, adding that the company sees more opportunities to apply the approach as the integration moves along. Bart Giordano, Senior Vice President and General Manager of RUCKUS Networks, said local production brings the brand closer to customers and partners in India.

Why local production matters here

The company links the move to the Make in India push for more domestic value addition in electronics and networking equipment. There is a commercial logic as well. Government departments, public sector buyers and regulated industries in India increasingly give weight to locally manufactured and locally supported technology in procurement, and Belden says local production strengthens its ability to serve sectors where that is becoming more important.

Switches sit in almost every wiring closet of an office, hospital or college campus. A local line can, in principle, shorten delivery times for Indian buyers who currently wait on imported stock, though Belden has not made any specific claim on lead times.

Belden is headquartered in St. Louis and has manufacturing capabilities in North America, Europe, Asia and Africa. It describes itself as a provider of complete connection solutions, with a history stretching back more than 120 years.

Belden frames the Pune decision as one part of a wider plan to realise value from the RUCKUS deal, through shared infrastructure, deeper customer relationships and a broader portfolio. It says it will keep looking across its global operations for similar moves.

For Indian IT buyers, the immediate change may be modest until pricing and availability of Pune-built units become clear. For the country's electronics manufacturing story, it adds another global networking brand to the list of those assembling gear locally.
