NEW DELHI: The Aprilia RS 457 uses a 320 mm front brake disc and a 220 mm rear disc, according to its official Indian model page. Aprilia specifies dual-channel ABS with a selectable setting that leaves ABS active only at the front. The distinction matters because disc dimensions and ABS configuration describe different parts of the braking system.
| RS 457 component | Official specification |
|---|---|
| Front disc | 320 mm |
| Front calliper | ByBre radial-mount, four pistons |
| Rear disc | 220 mm |
| ABS | Dual-channel, dual mapping; front-only setting available |
| Front fork | 41 mm, preload adjustable |
| Front/rear wheel travel | 120 mm / 130 mm |
The brake hardware and the ABS setting
A disc diameter is a physical dimension. The ABS setting describes electronic intervention in braking. Reading the two together is more useful than treating a large front disc as a complete account of the system. Aprilia names both the front calliper construction and the selectable ABS behaviour on the Indian page.
The phrase dual-channel describes the system's provision for both wheels. It does not mean every selectable setting retains the same intervention at both ends. Aprilia expressly describes the front-only option. That is a material qualification whenever a specification table abbreviates the motorcycle's braking equipment to the words dual-channel ABS.
For a rider moving from a simpler road motorcycle, the distinction is easy to miss. The same bike can have the same discs and callipers while its selected electronic configuration changes. Understanding the active setting is therefore part of understanding the motorcycle, rather than an optional detail hidden behind a hardware specification.
Why the chassis belongs in the discussion
Aprilia combines the brake equipment with an aluminium frame that uses the engine as a structural element. The Indian page also describes a preload-adjustable fork and rear monoshock. These are separate mechanical features, but together they explain why the RS 457 is presented as a sports platform rather than merely an engine with a fairing.
Preload adjustment and wheel travel should also be kept distinct. The former describes an available suspension setting; the latter states a dimension of movement. Neither number alone establishes how the motorcycle will behave over a particular patch of broken tarmac. An official specification is evidence of construction, not a substitute for a road test.
That is especially relevant to Indian use, where the same journey can include tightly spaced junctions, open roads and uneven surfaces. A sports motorcycle's equipment needs to be understood across those situations. The model's racing association cannot, by itself, establish a braking distance or guarantee how much grip will be available on any particular road.
Power, weight and electronic control
Aprilia's corporate technical description gives the parallel-twin engine a 35 kW output. It distinguishes 159 kg dry weight from 175 kg fully fuelled weight. Those are different measurement conditions for the same model. A comparison that mixes one with a rival's differently defined weight would not establish an accurate relationship.
The same official description lists Ride-by-Wire, three riding modes and adjustable traction control. Those features manage a different part of the riding task from the brake hardware. Traction control settings should not be confused with the selectable ABS configuration just because both are electronic rider aids.
The Indian page describes a colour TFT instrument panel and backlit handlebar controls. Their role is to provide access to information and settings. A display feature does not alter the meaning of a mechanical specification, and the presence of several modes does not remove the need to understand which functions each one changes.
What the published figures cannot establish
No braking-distance claim is made here. Disc diameter, calliper type and ABS availability do not provide enough evidence to calculate one. Tyre condition, surface grip, loading and the circumstances of a stop would all matter to such a result. The verified answer is the equipment and the selectable behaviour Aprilia actually describes.
