After Vishwanath Corridor, Manikarnika Project Ignites Fresh Debate in Varanasi.

Manikarnika Corridor Project Triggers Mixed Reactions in Varanasi
VARANASI: After the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor, Varanasi is once again at the center of discussion due to the proposed Manikarnika Corridor project.
Manikarnika Ghat is one of the most sacred places in Hinduism and is closely linked to the spiritual identity of Varanasi, one of the oldest cities in the world. For centuries, the ghat has been known as a place where people believe the soul attains liberation.
In recent days, demolition work in the Manikarnika area has raised concerns among local residents, priests, and heritage lovers. Several small temples and old structures, some believed to be more than 100 years old, have been removed as part of the development work.
The action has led to public anger, with many locals saying that an important part of the city’s history is being lost. On social media, #SaveManikarnika has been trending, especially on Instagram, showing growing opposition to the demolitions.
Supporters of the project say the corridor will improve facilities such as cleanliness, crowd control, and access for pilgrims and tourists. They also point to the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor, which faced protests in the beginning but later became a major religious and tourist attraction.
Officials have stated that the work is being done as per approved plans and that efforts will be made to protect the religious importance of Manikarnika Ghat while improving infrastructure.
As the project continues, the debate remains between preserving tradition and promoting development in the ancient city of Varanasi.
