₹1,200 Crore New Malviya Bridge in Varanasi to Be Completed by 2029, Rail and Road Connectivity to Improve

Varanasi: The construction of a new Malviya Bridge over the Ganga River in Varanasi is gradually progressing, with railway authorities indicating that the ambitious infrastructure project is expected to be completed by 2029. The bridge, estimated to cost around ₹1,200 crore, will be built close to the existing Malviya Bridge and is expected to significantly strengthen both rail and road connectivity in the region.
According to officials from Northern Railway, preliminary work for the project has already begun. This includes soil testing for bridge pillars and the removal of encroachments that were obstructing the construction site. Senior railway officials, along with representatives from Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) and engineering teams, recently inspected the proposed location to review the design and assess the progress of the initial preparations.
The new bridge will connect the Kashi/Rajghat area of Varanasi with the Vyasnagar–Domri region in Chandauli district. The proposed structure will feature six lanes for road traffic and four railway tracks, making it one of the major infrastructure upgrades planned for eastern Uttar Pradesh.
Once completed, the bridge is expected to strengthen connectivity along the Howrah–New Delhi rail corridor, enabling smoother movement of both passenger and freight trains. In addition to improving railway operations, the six-lane roadway will help reduce traffic congestion on existing routes across the Ganga.
Officials believe that the project will not only improve transportation but will also boost trade, tourism, and regional connectivity across eastern Uttar Pradesh and neighboring states, further supporting development in the region.
