NEW DELHI: Vi Prepaid Family lets eligible customers transfer 500 MB to another member through the Vi App. The sender must have more than 600 MB of eligible data available, and the recipient must use the transferred allowance before 11:59 PM that day. Joining a family does not replace anyone's existing recharge.
| Feature | Official condition |
|---|---|
| Group size | Two to four eligible Vi prepaid numbers |
| Transfer size | 500 MB per successful transfer |
| Sender balance | More than 600 MB of eligible data |
| Transfer frequency | Once daily, twice per calendar week, four times per calendar month |
| Transferred data validity | Until 11:59 PM on the transfer date |
| Membership restriction | 90 days from addition, subject to stated exceptions |
| Calls and OTT | Remain governed by each member's individual recharge |
A family group with separate recharges
The practical distinction is ownership of the allowance. This is a way to move a small portion of available data between linked prepaid numbers. It does not turn the household's balances into a single unrestricted pool. Each member keeps an individual connection, pack, benefits and expiry date.
That makes the feature relevant to a household whose members recharge at different times. A parent may still have usable data when a student runs short during the day. Sharing can address that immediate gap without requiring everyone to change their recharge schedule or move to postpaid.
The group can work across Indian states and telecom circles. Relatives living away from home therefore need not be excluded simply because their numbers belong to different circles. Eligibility still has to pass in the app; a family relationship by itself does not make every number compatible.
Check the balance before opening Share Data
Start by checking the sender's remaining eligible allowance. A large total shown elsewhere in the app may include benefits that cannot be transferred. The distinction matters when someone has extra data from a promotional offer or a separate add-on rather than the main pack.
Vi's terms exclude specified balances, including add-on packs, promotional packs, weekend rollover, Data Delight and OTT-linked data. Both sides also need an active eligible pack. The recipient should check the credited balance after the transfer instead of assuming that the sender's confirmation has completed the transaction.
Timing deserves attention. A transfer made late in the evening leaves a much shorter usable window than one made earlier. For a planned download or online class, send the allowance close enough to the activity that the recipient can actually use it before expiry.
Create the group in the Vi App
The official journey begins on the app dashboard's Family tab. Choose Create Family, select a contact or enter an eligible Vi prepaid number, and complete the verification for that member. The creator becomes the primary member. Once the group is ready, its dashboard provides the Share Data option.
Choose the primary member carefully. The role cannot simply be reassigned inside an active group. This is particularly relevant when one relative usually handles recharges but another expects to control membership. Agreeing on who manages the group first can prevent an avoidable reorganisation later.
The membership restriction also makes this more deliberate than sending an occasional recharge. Members ordinarily cannot leave or be removed during the stated restriction period. Vi lists exceptions, so readers should use the current terms when an account becomes inactive or another eligibility problem arises.
Keep discounts separate from the data transfer
Vi advertises eligible recharge discounts but does not publish a universal discount percentage in the pages checked. A household should assess the actual offer shown for its numbers. The sharing feature is concrete; a presumed saving on every future recharge is not part of this calculation.
