VARANASI: The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet approved expenditure proposals for six water and sewerage projects for Varanasi on Tuesday, October 27, 2026. The official decision estimates that implementation will extend sewerage benefits to about 8.52 lakh people and drinking water benefits to about 8.22 lakh people in the municipal area.

The decision concerns the expansion of city services. Varanasi's official AMRUT 2.0 register includes proposed water and sewer networks in Lahartara, Chitaipur and the Trans Varuna area. These localities feature in the wider programme, while the Cabinet note records the number of projects and the projected population to benefit.

Three water projects and three sewerage projects

The October 27 Cabinet decision, published by the state Information and Public Relations Department, places the Varanasi approvals within a package of seven projects for two municipal corporations. Six belong to Varanasi. The remaining project concerns drinking water in Lucknow.

Within Varanasi's six, the division is even: three sewerage projects and three drinking water projects. That distinction is useful for households tracking local infrastructure because the two sets of works serve different functions. The official estimates give a separate beneficiary population for each service.

The sewerage estimate is approximately 852,000 people. The drinking water estimate is approximately 822,000. The note does not identify how many people appear in both groups, so adding the figures would not establish a count of unique residents covered by the decision.

  • Decision date: October 27, 2026.
  • Varanasi projects: six.
  • Sewerage: three projects, about 8.52 lakh people projected to benefit.
  • Drinking water: three projects, about 8.22 lakh people projected to benefit.
  • Combined package: seven projects across Varanasi and Lucknow.

What the official project register shows

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs' Varanasi project register gives a more detailed view of the city's AMRUT 2.0 pipeline. It lists sewer network and house connection proposals for District 2B and 2C, as well as sewer house connection and associated infrastructure work for the extended Lahartara and Chitaipur areas.

Water entries separately include Trans Varuna house connections in the existing network and its extension. The register also lists Cis Varuna water supply schemes in the extended Lahartara and Chitaipur areas. Its descriptions show why water supply and sewer connections need to be followed as separate project components.

Those entries carry a detailed project report approved milestone on the register. That provides background on the city's project pipeline, rather than a fresh construction completion report. The Cabinet's October 27 expenditure approval is a further decision that residents can now track through the state's published record.

Approval and household service are different stages

The Cabinet note describes benefits expected after implementation. It does not announce that the six schemes have started supplying every intended household, and it gives no commissioning date for an individual Varanasi locality. The approval therefore establishes the decision on expenditure and the intended scale of coverage.

For residents, the next useful updates will be project specific implementation information and the point at which connections become available. The published decision does not set out an application procedure for household connections or a street by street construction timetable.

Earlier local reporting covers Dinapur water infrastructure and tubewell funding, a civic review of roads and a pond, and colony road, drain and park tenders. These provide background on other works; the new development here is the Cabinet's approval of expenditure proposals for six Varanasi schemes.
